I'm sure Admissions from various schools are aware of SDN. But I've heard that some will even go online and read posts. Is this rumor or is there truth to this? It doesn't really matter if they do or not, I was just curious.

Now why did you have to go and censure yourself ? 👎

Yes there have been members of the admissions committees of certain schools who do visit the site from time to time. It's best not to embarrass yourself too much here or say anything that could be used against you. I don't know the specifics but I think there was an incident a while back where some admissions people found out applicant's SDN screen names or something.

😱😱😱

RUN FOR THE HILLS!!! 😱😱

There watching us!! I gotta go... I have a night of editing ahead of me!!

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I think most adcoms who come on here just want to know whats being said about their schools, I wouldnt worry about it. Although this damn site could be why I didnt get in last year... ****

It's hard to predict how people will respond to your posts, even if they were made with good intentions. However, for those railing on schools, it's only natural for another person to be upset, especially if it's their vocation to make the school a more attractive destination for prospective students. It's learned wisdom to be mindful of what you say. Afterall ...

Students are on admissions committees too. Many of them can probably look you up on Facebook, Myspace or SDN.

Yeah, adcoms at 2 specific schools told me that they look at SDN. Use it to your advantage, though I'm not sure it could make or break you.

Many employers and I am sure dental schools, perform simple web searches to see who you are on the web. If you frequent forums and post really silly or bad things, look out. That info is out there in public and may come back to bite your ass.

That is why you should never, ever use your real name on most web sites, and why you should use an internet mail address that obscures your identity. It probably isn't very hard to figure out who you are based on a web mail address or even aliases in forums, but you can at least try not to make it too easy.

Avoid stupid stuff like putting pictures of yourself vomiting from too much drink on your facebook or my space page. Don't boast about how much weed you grew in college. Don't post nekkid pictures of yourself anywhere.

Stay off nambla forums, neonazi forums, etc.

Avoid getting into stupid arguments on forums, and don't call people names or insult them. Be civil and considerate in all on-line communications.

Don't surf for porn via either company or school servers. Companies log all internet surfing and have alarms that alert them to porn site access. I imagine many schools do the same. You don't want to suffer the embarrassment of having to explain what you were doing looking at a latex fetish site.

I would think that they have more to do than surf SDN and try to decipher if you may nor may not be one of the 2000 applicants that applied to their school in a given year.

I have heard of students being denied from graduate school because of facebook and myspace sites. I had a friend who had to login to his myspace page at a Pharmacy school interview last year. We all heard about the Ms. America incident with her pictures. Just becareful with what you have online, and if you are not doing anything that isn't appropriate, then you have nothing to worry about, right?

Is this why some people seem reluctant to link their predents page with their SDN posts? I'm not a dental student and I've only interviewed at one school so far. But based on how busy the interviewers looked at the school I was at, I highly doubt they are combing this site for acceptance purposes. Come on! They have a lot more important things to do than play detective on the internet, piecing together applications and SDN posts! Regardless, my rule is don't write anything on the internet, I wouldn't be willing to say in person.

During my first weak of school four people recognized me from SDN, seeing my screen name has my last name in it I am not surprised. Don't worry about it, as long as you don't say anything incriminating.

What if I am an ADCOM? dun, dun, duuuuuuuuuuun! :scared:

My screen name has my last name in it too, in a sneakier way 😉

hmm... assuming you're as nerdy as the rest of us, i'm guessing you chose something referenced to science. My guess is something "helmet shaped" in cranial anatomy ?

Nice try, but not even on the radar. My screen name actually has literally nothing to do with armor or shells in any way, shape or form. It's also not Armor's hell, nor do I have some kind of turtle fetish. 😀

Heh. ah well. my guess was the galea aponeurosis. Galea because it represents a helmet shaped structure anatomically. It was also your picture, because a part of the epicranial musculature inserts on the galea aponeurosis, causing the brow to creep back, raising the eyebrows. (Btw, who is that guy in your picture ? His name is escaping me.)

👎 I'll let someone else take a crack.

Yarborough totally talked to us about SDN when we met up with him. I don't think he read through all our posts on the Pacific thread, but he actually just complimented us on networking before school started. He was actually surprised to find out about the Facebook Site we had for our class...

But honestly, I don't think most dental ADCOMs look. Just a few and those that do just glance and don't spend too much time figuring out who is who. I remember Dr. Ancajas at UNLV mentioned SDn and said she was kinda disappointed by a post in the interview feedback on UNLV that was made by one student. Apparantly the student vented and raved about one of the interview day speakers and said things about his homosexuality and yadda yadda. Anyways, I think if you say general bad things that the ADCOMs already know about there schools like:

Pacific is freakin expensive. You might as well just buy seventeen masaratis, drive them to school the first day, and say....Here is the first year's tuition for you

or

USC has bad National Board passage rates

or

Mississippi is in the middle of nowhere

or

NYU has way to many students and a lot fail out the first year and the school doesn't seem to mind

or

Nova takes electronic attendance....that sucks

or

Loma Linda...geez, don't even get me started about Loma Linda

or

ASDOH has the most ridiculous criteria for admissions. It takes such random people

or

Howard takes minority students preferencially.

or

whatever

then you probably won't get nailed on it. I mean, if it's general, it's been said on SDN 100 times already. The ADCOMs are professors and deans and staff with a lot of other things to do than just look up people's SDN names and tag it to who may or may not be applying to their schools.
