Welcome to the forums. Have your talked with admissions staff at schools you are interested in?

A lot of children of dentists go to dental school. I'm not sure how effective need blind is. Can you tell us more what you mean?

I was just curious. I know that in the undergraduate process, schools say they are need blind. But haven’t seen posts here or anywhere about it.

I’m sure they’re need blind, but most schools don’t give out aid like they do in undergrad.

You should assume that you’ll be taking out the full cost of tuition and won’t receive additional aid like grants and scholarships. It happens, but it’s rare and doesn’t necessarily cover as much as you think it will.

I received a very small grant of $1,000 but this was a drop in the bucket compared to actual tuition costs and didn’t do much for me financially. I also didn’t receive word of getting it until I looked at my loan statement from my schools FAFSA.

Thanks for your response. Like most people, I’ll be doing lots of loans. I just remember some undergraduate schools had the reputation of “need aware” perhaps giving someone a leg up on admissions, all else equal. I am very early in this process so I have lots of questions. Thanks!

I don’t think that’s the case for dental school. I could be wrong. But I don’t think coming from a wealthier family or poorer family will differentiate anything unless your stats aren’t up to par with the schools standards.

You could argue that maybe wealthier students have access to more resources but again, that doesn’t necessarily matter if they aren’t an academically strong student who’s capable of passing a dental schools’ curriculum.

Tuition is much higher for dental school compared to undergraduate tuition, and the base of alumni donors is much smaller. You can find ways to cover other people's tuition in a huge class size that doesn't really exist for most dental schools.

Ability to pay is not considered for file review. Hence I'm not sure what you mean by "need blind."

Maybe one day we'll get some benefactor to underwrite most of one's tuition at a dental school. But not today.
