hey guys and gals a few days ago in the mail i received a letter of acceptance from NYU! the craziest thing is that i never even had an interview, i didn't even know it was possible to be accepted without one! anyway i wonder if am the only one or r there other people that this has happened to? along with the letter i received an invitation to go to an "Open House for Select Newly Admitted Students" which i suppose is for other students in my situation, which u can choose to go on jan 19 or 26. anybody know anything about this? like whether or not i really need to go?

anyway i'd appreciate any comments you all have to offer, and please try to respond to this thread cuz i would prefer not to be inundated with PMs 🙂

Not necessarily. Last year Cornell sent out acceptance emails to all the students that were on the waitlist by accident. They sent out a letter of apology, that is it. People tried suing, but to my knowledge nobody went through with it.

A mistake? Nah..it said in the letter that he was an applicant accepted without an interview. I highly doubt that such a letter could find its way to someone purely by accident. Congrats Mitch!

I believe it. What is the purpose of interview? to make sure you are not handicapped. The essay and letters of recommendation tell a lot about you. Creighton uses those! In the acceptance package, you have to sign a letter and send a deposite to them. Then if they make a mistake, they will contact you. Don't call them to confirm about the offer. Your high DAT score (21AA) compensates your low GPA. The campus visit is not a must as it said: "we know you may want to schedule a visit...". If you are an excellent outgoing person then you should attend; otherwise, stay home.

Congrats to MitchSE-R-I am really happy for you. The school is really impressive- you should go to the open house to get a feel for the place. The neighborhood is awesome.

however, I think you should give them a call to confirm. The call will serve many purposes:
1) give all of us who are on SDN the truth (that you can be accepted without an interview at NYU, and that strong letters of recommendation and personal statement will serve you well [as some other person points out])
2) give you the 100% guarantee that you are in at NYU, you do not have to guess or worry anymore.
3) Save you the deposit money if they told you they have made a mistake. Of course they will have to return your money if they made a mistake, but it would take a while to get the refund. You might need to save this money to make deposit at other schools.
4) Why not confirm if you are in? If you are accepted, a phone call will not hurt you at all, but rather boost up your confidence. Why not clear up the matter? For yourself and for all of us SDN who are nosy (like me).

thanks a lot everyone! i really appreciate the kudos, i think im gonna go to the open house on jan 19 since i'll be off work anyway and if there's anyone here that's a student there and will be around then i'd immensely appreciate it if we could get together and you could show me around a bit (i've never even been to nyc before so im pretty damn intimidated going there all by myself! )..please pm me if that's at all possible!

as far as calling them i honestly don't think it's necessary but when i call to schedule for this open house thing i'll see what they have to say

i'd also like to add i really thought essay edge did a bang up job making my personal statement sound the way i wanted it to..and i know my dentist wrote me a good LOR cuz i read it 🙂 but i honestly don't know what any of my professors wrote considering i didn't do so hot in their classes 😱 so i just don't know why they chose me out of everyone else with such better stats, could it have anything to do with demograhics?

NYU deemed your application very competitive. The thing you are going to attend is going to be meeting with faculty and NYUCD "scholars"...ie. people on scholarship who will talk to you about NYUCD.

Just wondering if you got an interview from the rest of the schools you are applying to? If NYU is not your top choice you might suffer even more by putting down deposit that may be a waste of money later on. Hehe, just teasing you. No pressure, it's better than nothing!

I was going to ask if you were a reapplicant but I noticed you said you hadnt been to New York. I am a reapplicant (as are others on SDN who are in a similar position) and because I interviewed last year, the admissions committee is going to evaluate my file without requesting that I interview again. I thought you were in this position. In any case, congrats, I wonder if anyone else has gotten accepted without an interview (at NYU). If you have the money and time, I would go just to see what you are getting into. I would also put the money down for the deposit just in case.

Fruity I just found out I received an interview from Temple, but I have to call tomorrow to schedule it. Not sure when it will be...good luck on yours

would you do everyone a favor and call the school to see why they accepted you w/o an interview??? i mean, if you had 3.9 with 24 DAT, i could understand... but considering your GPA, it is very unusual and according to the accompanying letter that you received, it seems there are others with similar situation that are invited to the school post-acceptance. was there something in particular in you application??

thanks so much everyone! honestly i don't want to call them and ask why lol..i'll see if i can find out from other people at this open house..i found out though that there r only 25 spots for each of these open houses which leads me to believe they only accepted 50 people without an interview 😕 anyway i've booked a flight and i'll be there the 18th to the 20th! man am i excited, it'll be my first time in new york i can't wait..if any of you go there and would be willing to show me around a bit i'd really appreciate it!

Not sure about NYU, but it didn't surprise me too much. In Loma Linda's secondary app, it says "an interview may be required..." while in others' it says "an interview is required...." So I guess, there are cases where schools just accept applicants based on what they read from the app and lor's. Anyway, they must really like you! Congratulations!

I don't believe Mitch is at all lying nor do I see a glitch in the system. The reason being is that I spoke to my friend yesterday who has also applied to NYU and got accepted without an interview. His scores weren't stellar, but enough to get accepted.

It makes sense considering that NYU's has an incoming class of over 250, which would mean they either accept everyone they interview or they would have to be loaded with interviews in order to fill up their class. If this is the case, they are making it easier for themselves. But then again I heard they have a low passing rate for first year students. Um, could this be the reason!?!?!

In accordance with Mitch, I was also one of the lucky people to receive acceptance without an interview, not to mention I didn't even send in my secondaries! No kidding. I didn't send my 75 dollar fee, or a picture. I wonder if they will ask me for it.

I was initially confused thinking that maybe they made a mistake, and fearful to call them ("oh yeah, we made a mistake, you really weren't accepted. Thanks for pointing it out for us") However, a week after the first letter, a second letter came stating exactly what Mitch said... "as an applicant who has been admited without visiting the school for an interview, we know you may want to schedule a visit." So that confirms the fact that it is legit.

I'm excited knowing that I can be rejected from everywhere else, and would still have some place to go in September, however I really have my goals set on California schools, or another private school. (Perhaps I should just be content).

Anyway I just bought a red-eye flight on the 18th from SF to NY non-stop, and then its roundtrip on Thursday for 200 dollars. No kidding. So I'm happy now, but I got to kick in the gear and get my UC 2ndaries send in this week.

If anyone can show me around NYU on that day I would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure they will ask you for the fee. I sent USC a check and it took them forever to clear. I was worried, so I called. They said not to worry, my app still went into Review regardless of the fee. But if invited, the fee will be brought up at the interview if not cleared by then. I could have waited a little longer, but I sent in a cashier check. The next day the check showed up in my bank! So I double-paid for the fee! Anyway, congratulations!

Dont stress the temple interview at all. Its so laid back you will forget that you are in an interview. Just relax and talk.. dont be one of the quiet people because you will get overlooked. Good luck
