does anyone know how one can become a physician in an adolecent clinics within hospitals? i know that there are adolescent fellowships following peds residency, but not that many....i wondered if the physicians in the adolescent specific areas are ones that have completed a fellowship, residents, or hospitalists? in other words, can a 3 yr peds residency enable you to have that as your job.....(i was a social worker with teenagers and am interested in adolescent health, but unfortunately no fellowship in the area where i'll probably wind up)

Adolescent medicine is a fellowship program after residency-it's 3 years after pediatrics, and 2 years after internal medicine or family practice (this may change). I think most clinics look for fellowship trained docs, but as you said the supply is small so there may be some that will take just residency training. So much of outpatient adolescent medicine is eating disorders, and that really requires more training than we get in residency, and many adolescent medicine docs also do inpatient coverage. Don't give up though! If there's no fellowship where you are they may also be more likely to hire someone with less training (and since adolescent medicine has been described as "social work with a stethescope" you'll have a definate edge!).

thanks...i appreciate the thoughts!
