I have no idea if this debate was ever settled, so I am here to settle it. This applies to Army HPSP, but prolly the other two as well.

"Effective January 6, 2006, Reserve Component (RC) members called to duty and serve more than 30 days are authorized BAH. This includes Active Duty for Training (ADT). BAH entitlements for a RC member called to duty for more than 30 days is now based on the principal place of residence (zip code) of the member at the time called or ordered to active duty. It is no longer based upon the place at which they are performing duty. This change of BAH applies to all RC members.

RC members without dependents are required to show proof of housing costs to receive BAH when duty is in excess of 30 days. You must submit a copy of your Orders, Lease Agreement and a DA Form 5960 as proof to Finance. Finance mail address is: Defense Military Pay Office, ATTN: HPSP. Room 115, 1706 Stanley Road, Building 2263, Fort Sam Houston, Texas 78234-5023. Finance phone number is 1-210-221-2793/0455, FAX 1-210-221-1024.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact your student advisor at 1-877-MED-ARMY, option (1) or email at [email protected], FAX 1-703-681-8044."

This is great if you are married, but single folks still get screwed out of BAH during their ADTs. Seriously, can anyone explain why married people get BAH while single people get nothing? Or why the BAH w/dependents is so much higher than BAH w/o dependents?

I can. Your spouse can't live in the base dorm with you, so you're still required to maintain a separate residence for her/him to live in.

As to why BAH with is higher than without, you got me there. A house is a house regardless of how many occupy it. I guess the presumption is that more people requires a larger house and, as a result, higher rent.

BAH is based off of a number of variables, rental payment- and utility-wise. For a single military member, the biggest rental property that the person is expected to own is a three bedroom townhouse, with most members selecting apartments. However, with dependants, that changes to up to a 4 bedroom single detatched house. So the difference in rental rates and utilities paid is supposed to be made up in the BAH rates.

:wow: So, if I am reading this right, for those doing their rotations at Wright-Patterson (For example), will get more BAH than those actually stationed long-term at Wright-Patt (Assuming their coming from an area where the BAH is higher)

Looks like it. I'm not sure what they'll use for mine, since I'm really close to atlanta but not actually in it.

Nevermind, that website above worked.

The military does all it can to encourage people to get married. Married people are theorized to be more stable. When a service member has a family to provide for they are much less likely to just stop showing up for work because they don't feel like it.

Early in the 20th century Henry Ford paid married men more than sinlge men to encourage his workers to get married, settle down, and buy a house. He figuered once these men had a house they would basically be forced to come to work everyday to pay their mortgate. The military is using a similary logic, although it doesn't hinge on home ownership.

Umm, yeah, like I can give just stop paying rent while I do my ADTs 🙄 The idea that single people don't have to "maintain a separate residence" while on active duty is ludicrous.

Yeah, I guess a good wife and pack of rugrats will do what the prospect of prison time and a dishonorable discharge won't. 🙄

Hey it's their theory, not mine. Although I would suspect people with a family have that much more to lose from prison time/dishonorable discharge than a dude who would only be screwing himself(and thus the family man is more likely to take the reprecussions more seriously).
