hi all,
i am plannign to sit NBDE part 1 in this coming Dec.
i am still in the 3rd year of dental school in Down-Under, and i was just wondering if getting 75-80ish score (just passing) will be looking alright when my applications to Adv standing programs are viewed.

are there going to be certain 'cut-lines' when they screen candicates?

i feel it's going to be somewhat vague when they actually select students...what are the guidelines? (well, i know that candidates are interviewed, but which matters more, the Part 1 score or the Interview??)

do they accept students on the basis of 'quota-system'? (for example, if it is rare that European trained dentists apply for Adv Standing programs, then are they more likely to be accepted? compared to Indian-trained dentists since there are lots of Indian dentists applying for the programs...i would say..)

lastly, what about taking NBDE Part 2 (with just the passing score of NBDE Part1) and passing NBDE Part 2? is this going to help in any advantageous way? well, i know that some schools 'recommend' to take Part2...so...i am just curious.

NBDE scores do matter to a very great extent.
Some of the Universities do have a minimum required score. And nowadays it is getting very COMPETITIVE, so a better score wud make a difference. To be called to an interview u shud be havin a good score(not everyone wud be called).
Some Universities do ask for a NBDE 2 score.

one more question to ask ...
so once you are invited for an interview, they wouldn't really care about the NBDE score, would they?
to my knowledge, once interviews are performed, candidates will be re-screened and selected on the basis of their achievements in the interviews; am i correct? (or on the basis of their mannual skills if any practical exams are performed as a part of the screening process.)

p.s.
oh, how competitive is it to get an admission offer for the adv. program nowadays? (e.g. what's the acceptance rate like if i will be shooting for Columbia or Upenn for example?)

i am not sure if the scores wud matter after u are called for the interview, but i have a feeling - if u are neck to neck with another candidate then they wud give preference to the person with better scores. and if the university does have a skills test then probably they wud prefer the person with better dexterity.
as far as my knowledge goes the number of seats for columbia keeps varying. from the information i got it cud be 2-3 seats and the max number of seats for advanced standing at columbia once reached 15 seats.

Some more info for you W... NBDE scores are there to get you that interview... how you perform at the interview will give you a spot or not. How did you do on your Part 1 in December? What was your score? Have you completed your 3rd year yet? What are your plans now? Still making plans to come over to the US?

I would say do whatever you have to,to stand apart from rest of the applicants.Give everything your best shot.A high Part 1 score with a good Sop and an even better interview whould definately make it hard for colleges to ignore you.What scores you have back home,cannot be changed.But what you have to achieve in the future,is still in your hands.Give it your best W....and I'm sure you'll sail through.
