Well it's my first semester of college and I signed up for my courses today. Here's the breakdown (btw at my college each course is 4 credit hours, so 4 classes is a standard load)

1. Cell Biology
2. General Chemistry 1
3. Advanced Academic Writing
4. Standard Philosophy Class that all first semester freshman have to take

I wanted to take Introduction to Academic Writing instead of Advanced Academic Writing, but they told me my ACT score was too high to place me in that. I really do not want to take an advanced class because I'm not sure it will be weighed any heavier by medical school adcoms for me to take a harder class. So what's SDN's consesus on this issue? Is it better to take an advanced class, or a regular class of the same subject? I feel like I'm in high school again.

go ahead and take the advanced class. it won't hurt and might help if some med schools like to see things like that.

Isn't Cell Biology a second-year coarse?

It's the standard biology course for incoming freshman at my college. I believe it's the equivalent of Biology I.

I'm guessing when you typed "Cell Biology" you typed it as shorthand for Cellular Biology...?

Go with what you want. Although, If you would receive an "honors" distinction on your transcript for the upper course, you may want to consider it. Otherise, don't worry about it, as no adcom in the world has your college's course catalog memorized.
