Thought this might be a good resource for the 1-2 other people who are applying and SDN members this year. I've heard of some people already getting interviews even though the process was pushed back a month. Any thoughts on the virtual interviews? Tips from past applicants?

I'm applying this year. Haven't received much interviews so far (only 3) and all of them are virtual. I applied nationwide. The programs that sent interviews are that I heard of are:

- Mayo Clinic Rochester.
- Baylor.
- Ohio State University.
- University of Minnesota.
- University of San Antonio.
- South Florida University.
- Parkview Hospital Indiana.
- Case Western.

Appreciate it if those who know about other programs that sent interviews to post them in this post.

are we still early in the interview season?

I'm not sure if it's early or not but seems many programs already sent their interviews. Hoping to get more next week.

It sounds like most programs have sent out interviews already. These are strange times due to COVID. Previously, invites were more distributed throughout the interview months but due to covid and a 1 month delay in invites, it seems that most program were prepared already and sent out their invites.

I'll ask my cofellow who is applying what interviews he's gotten so far and update this later

I know of one program, who has not yet sent out any interviews. I think the majority of programs are done with invitations. I think there has been a higher likelihood of applicants not cancelling an interview because of the video interviews, and thus less re-circulation of invites but that's purely a guess.

Any idea of how many interviews to be relatively "safe"? I thought it was interesting on the ASGE website that they made a comment about analysis showing that ranking more programs does not necessarily mean a higher likelihood of matching.

That’s quite a lot of programs. Has everyone else pretty much given up hope for more interviews?

I think most interviews have been offered or pending to be scheduled. I anticipate seeing programs withdrawing for the match because internal candidates filling the position due to lack of exposure to other programs given pandemic. For instance, mount Sinai likely took someone and is no longer participating in the match.

I thought that might happen originally but a lot of programs already offered interviews. As far as I know, I haven’t heard of that happening anywhere else.

I gave up getting more interviews. I don't have a stellar CV but I was hoping to get few more since I applied nationwide. A friend of mine has excellent CV and didn't get much interviews neither.

Same on all counts. My co-fellow and I both applied pretty widely but not as many interviews as expected. Oh well, let’s see how this all shapes up.

So what has the consensus folks? Are programs being more shy? Did you pull the trigger on applying to everything since its zoom? Just curious

The application was submitted before the pandemic hit the US so we didn't know interviews will be online at that time. I applied nationwide as I don't have an impressive CV for AE and wanted to increase my chances to match (not sure if this is true).

Congrats to all who matched. Weird year with virtual interviews. Good university programs did not fill their positions this year!! ‍♂️

What are some of the places you’ve heard didn’t fill? I was guessing that would be the case for more than average this year because it seemed programs were interviewing the same number of applicants but because we didn’t have to fly anywhere it was just SO EASY to interview at more places as an applicant.

63 matched compared with 70 last year, difficult to account for candidates interest with virtual platform

What programs didn’t match? Would be interested to hear.

If you go on the ASGE match website and search for programs like how you did to apply it will show how many positions they offered and how many are unfilled. Not sure how accurate that is though if places just signed people outside of the match. Penn is one of those listed like that but didn’t someone say that they signed someone before match lists were due?

Doesn’t the website get updated if they sign someone before the match? Mount Sinai for example.

Not sure. I heard UT San Antonio signed someone outside the match but ASGE says they still have one spot.

Based on using that search Wash U didn’t match anyone either. That’s surprising

Anyone know how many applicants didn’t match?

If you go through each program on the ASGE website, some programs list the number of positions and how many are open. Not sure if this is accurate and if these programs signed people out of the match. I know Wash U did not fill as my co-fellow who applied and did not match interviewed with them after results on Monday and still waiting for a response.

That’s surprising for Wash U right? That’s a pretty reputable program?

WashU is an interventional powerhouse that edmundowicz built over many years before going to colorado, 10 programs didn't fill off initial match including UPenn, the whole match got jarred this year

I guess It's possible that certain programs were overly selective (not interviewing enough) and with applicants not feeling the need to cancel their virtual interviews lead to certain programs not matching. I know for a fact that some applicants attended numerous virtual interviews at programs they had no intention of ranking. But I heard the programs that did not match quickly filled their positions.
