Hello y'all--

I have applied to residencies in a very competitive field starting in the PGY-1 year. I figure I should have a backup plan just in case, and the residencies for my backup plan specialty are advanced match spots starting in PGY-2 year, necessitating a prelim/transitional year. Here's my question...How does this work in the match? Do I rank the PGY-1 spots together and the advanced match spot separately, or do they all go in the same pool? Thanks for the help on this!

What specifically are you applying to? Ophtho for instance is a whole separate match from ERAS and the NRMP

I hope I understood your question correctly...

Let's say you want to list 20 ortho programs, then 10 radiology and anesthesia programs (for backup). The rad/anes programs go on your main list as choices 21-30.

For each program requiring a separate PGY-1 year, there is a sublist of PGY-1 programs. Let's say your 21st program is columbia radiology in NYC, your 22nd is penn anesthesia in philly. you would have a sublist of transitional/prelim PGY-1 programs for columbia, probably focusing mostly on NYC-area prorgams. You would then have a whole separate list of trans/prelims for penn. Should you, say, match your 12th choice ortho program, everything else is ignored. Should you match columbia rads, you are then entered into the match pool for PGY-1 using your sublist for columbia. Should you match penn, your sublist for penn is used. This way, you won't match in PGY-1 in boston and PGY-2 in san diego if you don't want to move twice.

I hope that gives you your answer...

Let me append a few more questions.

Suppose you are interested in an early match field like urology, but are concerned that you will not match. In this case, do you also apply to and schedule interviews in programs that participate in the march match (ie, IM, peds, etc.) while also doing urology interviews? And, in the event you are unsuccessful in January, then do you enter the march match?
