I am a trained dentist from India. I recently got accepted into 1yr "Advanced program for International dentists" at NYU. Does anyone have any idea about this program ? Would it beneficial for me in anyway as my main aim is to get into Advanced standing program and become a licensed dentist in US ?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated...

r u talking abt the one with 63K in tution fees plus 22K in living...

Getting into a US program will demonstrates ur commitment to studies in the US, adds US work-ex to ur Cv, and may help u get LORs from US trained dentists...
So, it MAY help ur application, but it'll always just be a PART of ur application n the tough challenges of a good NBDE 1 score and TOEFL remain the same.

so, a $85k program as a stepping stone to DDS. .. ur call.

p.s : do check if the program is CODA accrediated. that may help u later on in ur career...

Thanks a lot for your reply...
Well yes....you got it right..this is the same program. I am thinking of this program just to boost up my resume. I have already passed both NBDE-1 & 2 with scores of 88 & 77. But, I have a low gpa of 2.82.
The program is not ADA accredited.

oh ok..thanks for updating me on its CODA status.

There are many ways to upgrade ur resume. Im sure you would be aware of volunteering etc...
why not apply to a AEGD instead...would be much cheaper and most are accrediated.
try getting ur GPA evaluated by WES.. WES generally gives a higher GPA and some schools may accept it.

Practically, Wes has no importance now...since all schools are accepting caapid and we need to upload ece too.

If I apply to AEGD this yr, i will start in July 2011 (only if I get accepted).
This program is already in my hand, and I will be done by July 2011. I think a year of time matters a lot. A waste of 1 yr means getting into DDS a year late, and then staring a job late. I am gonna earn more than the tuition fee of this program a year, if I start earning earlier. Thats what I think.

I just want to have different opinions. Many of the SDN members might be aware of this program, and some of them might have got enrolled.

Any more suggestions are highly appreciated...

I think your logic is good..especially since we dont know what new rules they make every year.I am almost in the same boat as you,so I know how tough it is.. any program will work in your favour definitely. The only thing to consider is your financial constraints.
Added to that..AEGD is very tough to get in..they dont consider part 1 n 2..instead want research and stuff.

I agree. any program will add to your application. do explore all options to improve on - volunteering and research also.

R u not applying this year? apply to D schools this year too...keep improving on all counts... re-apply to the ones u had applied last time around. re-work ur SOP.
Do you know anyone who is currently in this program..talk to them... they will be able to guide u better.

I am definitely applying this year. But I am not sure about it until I have something in my hands, so I do not want to waste this year until next July.
At least I will have a yr of US dental experience on my resume, if there is need to re-apply next year.

I don't know anyone who is currently in this program. That's why I am trying to contact if there is anyone on SDN.

if you are able to pay for that 1 year, you have a pretty good chance to get into dds program. If you are doing an advanced program in clinical specialty then you even have the chance to enroll in a specialty program at nyu.But you need to impress the faculty while attending that particular program[not difficult though]. All the schools that have preceptorship programs do give waitage to the students who enroll into that program.
If you can afford it then why not.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I am definitely going for this program, and hope it will help me in a positive way.
