Hi everyone,
I know this sort of thing comes up relatively frequently, but I couldn't find many threads touching this exact topic.
I'm currently choosing my 4th year schedule after having taken a research year. I'm debating psych vs. neuro and will be doing rotations in both. During my 3rd year neuro rotation, I did consult and outpatient.
For my fourth year rotation, I have the option of doing inpatient, outpatient, consult, and either at a smaller, more general neuro hospital or a larger, very specialized hospital.
I want to get inpatient experience, but the students who were on inpatient (same service) during the 3rd year elective hated it. The service (and students) are overburdened and all the residents/attendings seem pissed off, the list being regularly >75 patients, with 4 residents on service! For that reason, I feel it would be hard to do a solid job or get a feel for more "normal" inpatient neuro.
My prior outpatient experience was at a VA, whereas the other two are in very different locations.
One of my neuro advisors had mentioned a few things: the service is supposed to be split and have more residents soon, but not until after I want to do the rotation. Around the same time, one of the big famous neuro attendings is usually on the inpatient service. The smaller hospital would include taking neuro consults at the hospital while in clinic, while working in a more "resident" like position (no residents at that hospital.) No fancy big name attendings though.
Any advice regarding what sort of rotation would be most useful for: 1. Getting an even better feel for neuro as a specialty. and 2. Getting in to a neuro rotation (should I shoot for rotating with the chair of the dept...? To be frank, I'm not the best med student ever, probably a bit above average at my institution w/r/t neuro.)
Thanks!
NTB
