I am a 3rd year preparing to apply for VSLO but I am having second thoughts. I was thinking of doing 1 away for neurology at UMich (my top choice) to boost my chances of getting in there. For reference I am at a non T20 MD school, have a good amount of neurology research (1 basic science pub, 3 clinical research posters), and I honored in neurology. I read what some people said about aways online, and I am now doubting if it is really worth doing an away and if it will help me that much. I am broke so if it doesn't help significantly, I would much rather not do one. Any advice?

Away rotations are do or die. It could help your ability to get an interview offer (almost always), but your chances of matching will hinge on your absolutely crushing it. If there’s any bad interaction with a single faculty or resident that could tank your Chances there

If cost is an issue, you should not feel the need to do any aways so long as you had some neurology rotation as a student

Agree with above. Away is a double-edged sword. You are likely to get an interview by doing away there, but if you just piss off even 1 person, you may very well ruin your chance of matching there. I would consider away for those who do not have a home neurology program or for those who are looking into some reach programs where away can really boost their chances.

Being USMD with good LORs and some research, you will have no issues of getting interviews at most programs, and aways are more likely to hurt you. Taken together with cost of doing away, I would recommend against it. I think if you interview well and express strong interests in UMich, you will have a good chance of matching there.
