hi ,

does anyone know of the possiblity for ecfmg certied MDs to do a shortend dds or dmd program in the US? i heart that canada might allow mds for adanced standing . do the USA as well ?

Hey arye, no.. this isn't possible. You would be required to do all 4 years. There are a small handful of American OMS programs that have in the past on the "odd occasion" accepted an MD for a combined DDS/OMS program (shortening dental school down to 3 years). However, these have all been graduates of American medical schools.

By all means email some US programs and ask, but I'm 99.99% sure they won't allow this as a foreign MD.

I think you should continue to pursue OMS if that is your passion. 👍

(assuming you already have a UK registered medical degree) ... this is how I see your options:

• If you want to work primarily in the US: Complete a US DDS/DMD degree (4 years), then apply for a US OMS program (4 years)... then later if you wanted to also work in the UK you could go back and do 1-2 years of fellowship in a UK program and sit the FRCS (OMFS) exam.
• If you want to work primarily in the UK: Complete a UK BDS/BChD degree (4-5 years), then apply for UK OMS program (5-7 years)… then later if you wanted to work in the US too for a bit you could either get a job straight away as faculty in a US school, or you could complete 2-3 years of accredited fellowship training in a US program and sit for the ABOMS exams and get a US license.

If you want to pursue OMS in the states.. you could look into applying to UOP (University of the Pacific) for dental school as their undergraduate dental program is only 3 years anyway (if that's what you're after).

i would apply to the pacific university but it is really insane what they take for fees !!! eruopeens arents used to that ....
in the UK the shortest dental programm is also 3 years.

I completely understand. 🙂 However, if you want the best chance to get into a US program it would be in your interest to complete a US dental degree. UK dental degrees are still well regarded in the states however, so give it a shot! Good luck

So that pretty much cuts Columbia's dental program down to 3 years as well. Another good option for those interested Maxfacs! 👍
