Since the ratio of male:female at most Optometry schools is roughly 30:70, is it actually an advantage to be a male when applying? Are the schools looking to try and balance the ratio, or do they not care at all, and not take gender into consideration?

they care.. but you still have to be on your stuff...

I don't think it matters.

I think it does matter, but probably unofficially. A friend of my classmate's got in with a GPA of 2.8...he had a descent OAT score, AA 380. He's struggling in optometry school now, his grades are very low.

yeah, in fact, i think it is probably advantageous to be female. Think about it, if it was advantageous to be male, don't you think there would be more males than females? Duh.

Unless your penis can sense a person's prescription, I don't think it makes much of a difference.

now say if one's penis was able to read a person's prescription, should i, i mean, should that person tell them in the interview??

Well, you'll have to demonstrate it eventually so it is probably best to tell them up front.

It does matter at some schools.
I am a 1st year (male) student at Pacific University College of Optometry, where they try to keep the gender ratio roughly 50/50. In this case, being male could be an advantage b/c it's possible you are taking a "male spot" that could have been filled by a smarter/better qualified female.

I'm not sure how the other schools work, but I would guess they end up with more females because those females are the most qualified candidates.

My advice is to work as hard as you can to get into optometry school.

hmm, i never thought that it would be more advantageous being one gender or the other; i just thought that females pursued optometry more so than males lol.

but kind of straying off topic, is being a minority advantageous to being accepted? i was just wondering since when registering for the oat you're asked if you're okay with "minority recruiting". anyone know anything about this?

I've been wondering the opposite....is it disadvantageous to be a female asian? Since more applicants are female and/or asian?
