Hey everyone,

This is my first time actually posting something and registering on here, and hopefully you guys can help. I started premed late (end of sophomore year) and I'm a non-science major. I'm in an honors college and have an overall of 3.56 right now, and a 2.97 sgpa. I had a much higher gpa for both categories, but was homeless due to Hurricane Sandy last semester and my professor wouldn't let me inc orgo 1, and gave me an F.

Unfortunately, with work and finishing last semester's coursework, I'm not doing great in orgo 1 and physics 2 now. I'm worried I'm going to fail them this semester. I couldn't drop them because of my required course load for my honors program and I just feel trapped. I'm already enrolled to retake physics 2 again, and I'm alright with taking orgo again, but I know that med schools combine your class grades. I prefer DO school anyway--but I feel like this semester is just really going to end my chances. I've done research and am a bioethics and public health minor and music minor--and have written a thesis paper, so I'm well-rounded and I have hospital experience and volunteer work.

I'm taking a year off (as I'm a senior now) to make the EC's and everything stronger. Unfort. my other concern is the fact that I don't really want to take orgo 1 over the summer, but what school will look at me with 2 F's going in? I'm not sure how in-progress classes work.

Also, do psych classes count in a science gpa? At my school, it's considered a natural science (with chem and bio and the like), but I'm not sure for med schools... That would def. boost my sgpa.

Any help you could give would be appreciated. I haven't taken the mcat yet, and I realize I have a very unique situation. What are my chances at MD and DO school? What should I do?

Thanks!

I'm very sorry to hear of your losses. Keep trying and everything will work out the way it should. In answer to your question about psychology courses, I don't believe they count towards BCPM, at least for AMCAS. Here is the link with all course designations:

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for the kind response. The link you gave me won't open. Any others I can use?

very sorry to hear of your situation. I keep hearing that one can sometimes do retroactive withdrawals, so see if you can do that for the Orgo class you failed.

This isn't good. We expect you to be able to balance a heavy course load and do well.

I'm afraid that you won't be getting many interviews, if any. You should take a breather and consider soing some post-bac work to repair the damage being done to your GPAs. With grade replacement, that will do wonders. I've had student who have failed things 2x before getting it right the 3rd time. But while there is hope eventually for DO programs, you're done for MD, unless you do a rigorous SMP.
