Hi everyone,

I will be doing my first sub-I (general surgery) at one of the Harvard hospitals next month. I am coming from a Canadian medical school, and I am wondering if anyone can offer any tips on how to do well/what to expect, etc. During my surgery rotation/electives (11 weeks of general surgery done so far), I have been doing consults (ER and ward), writing progress notes, daily orders, post-op orders, post-op notes, seeing patients in clinic independently and dictating clinic letters. I have also dictated admission h&P and discharge summaries on several rotations thus far as well. I have spent a lot of time in the OR so I feel pretty comfortable there.

I feel like I have a pretty solid skill set going in to my sub-I, but I am really not sure what to expect as a 4th year elective student in the US. I grew up in the US, but I have limited experience with the healthcare system/medical education. For example, we never do 'pre-rounding' here, we always do things as a team with students/interns writing notes and orders to be reviewed and cosigned by the senior and/or chief residents. We also have a pretty good provincial electronic health record here, so most of my experience is working within that type of system.

I will be applying in general surgery (US) this year, so I really want to do well on this rotation. As I said, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.
