Hello everyone,
I guess I am unique because I am only interested in DO school. Preferably in the state of Texas. I have not been a full time student for a while. During most of my undergrad I was involved in several organizations where I held positions that required a lot of responsibility and time.
My freshman year I managed to get my EMT license and i worked in surgery as an assistant (paid) for two years. I have taken most of my pre med prerecs, I made a few A's but mainly B's in the classes (never made any C's in these classes praise the lord). This is mainly due to a lack of effort on my part, science has always come easy to me so I never had to go to these classes and my studying for them was minimal.
In my junior year I decided to rethink my medical decision (My Grandfather, Uncle, and Father are all DO's) to find out if that was what I really wanted to do or if I was just doing it for them. I then worked as a paid legislative aide for a state representative and got a real estate license. It has been three years since I pursued other things and it has all pointed back to medicine.
In more words then one, I have grown up and realized the world is full of lawyers, salesman, and bankers but good doctors are in serious need. I had orginal been turned off because of the daily hassle I saw my father in with insurance companies and the fear of some lawyer suing him someday for everything. In the end these reasons are not good enough to scare me away from something know I would be good at doing. To cut to the chase here is my game plan to apply in May and would like yalls advice.
I am in Biochem, Genetics, Chem Mentoring for Children, Bio lab, and Music class this semester. I am really trying in school at this point and am setting the curve in all of my classes.
I want to develope a relationship with my Biochem and Genetics teacher so they will write me good rec letters showing an admission board a glimpse of my intellectual ability if I apply myself (the rest of my transcript is sub par).
I have taken a pratice MCAT and scored a 28 (first try, I know I can improve) I have until April to study for it so I am shooting for anything over 30. The school I want to attends average is a 26.
My GPA cum is a 3.18 and my science is a 3.26. I was involved in too many things and school was not a priority in life, but I cant change the past, only outcomes in the future.
With a 4.0 this semester and another one next semester in some Bio coures if I score 30 or better what do yall think my chances are for getting into DO school, and what advice would yall give me for things I should do over the next year to up my chances.
Thanks
