Hi guys,

I would love to go to Stony Brook or Buffalo for their relatively inexpensive tuition being that they're instate. If not then I'd like to go to NYU at least.

Im currently in CUNY Baruch college. My current overall GPA is 3.4. I have a strong upward trend. My freshman year GPA was 2.7. This was because i took Calculus and got an F, then i retook it and got a D. Ever after those two freshman semesters I've had around 3.7 average every semester, including in all my major (biology/chemistry) courses. My sGPA includes my calculus grades so likely isnt as good as my BCP GPA of probably somewhere around 3.7.

I was secretary of Operation Smile in my school for a semester, then VP this past semester and likely next semester as well.

I was planning on retaking Calculus in another school (since my school wont allow me to retake) and acing it. But, i just today did the cost analysis and it would cost me about $2000 in total savings (i calculated tuition id have to pay plus the loss of Full-Time student status from my school).

Im taking the DAT in February, really going to try hard and am banging out 8 hr+ days.

My questions are: Do you guys think i have a shot at buffalo or Stonybrook?

If not, then do i have a shot at NYU?

Should i shell out the about $2000 to retake Calculus in another school to maybe up my chances?

I'd prefer to get some answers from those who have applied to Buffalo or Stony brook and know some specifics about these schools.

come back when you take your DAT. Try to get at least a 23AA if you want stony brook

You're smoking something. OP, a 21 AA and balanced scores would give you a great shot at buffalo, and a good shot at stony. Both schools are fantastic.

I have a 3.6gpa and a 23AA and I just just got an invite for stonybrook. Stony is very competitive, with the OP's GPA, he need to shoot higher than a 23AA. That's just my experience

My interest is more in Buffalo, since i guess they have more loose on requirements.

You guys think i should retake calculus for the about $2000 cost? Or just take another class instead and go on with life.

Can anyone link me in on latest average admission scores for schools? I know there's an excel spreadsheet somewhere.

Meh, I was in the first interview group this cycle for Stony and only have a 20AA with a 3.75gpa...they interviewed me last cycle in October too with a 18AA.... I didn't apply till 9th batch. Waitlisted both times but still.... Stony does have a 21AA or 22AA average, I think though.

Strange that you can't retake Calc again at your school.

The biggest thing I would say for both is to apply early for sure! That way you get one of the earlier interview spots. My application wasn't under review until the beginning of September, so even though I received an invite for UB at the end of the month it was until January! Other than that, I agree with everyone else, get your GPA up and solid DAT scores will do it

It all comes down to your performance on the DAT. If you get 22+ on each section, then your chances are pretty high. If you get an 18AA, I would say breathe under the New York Lotto motto which goes like "You never know".

a 18 wouldnt be good for NYU?

I've been on an upward trend now, this 3.406 i have now is as of me receiving my last grade, this past night.

With each coming semester i ask myself if i have a chance at Buffalo, and now i feel like Lloyd in dumb and dumber.

"So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!* "

Buffalo's GPA is around a 3.68 for matriculants. You want to shoot for a 3.7+. And DATs should be 20s across the board more or less. The school's demographics is in the slightly older range like 25+ age wise.

It hard to say...

For UB: I applied second batch, 22AA, 3.7 sci, instate and did not hear back from UB. Another one of my friends got rejected 22AA 3.8 sci also instate. I've seen people with lower stats get in so clearly your GPA and DAT is not everything. I think my lack of dental extra currics (only had a few) was the problem as Buffalo seems to emphasize that a lot.

NYU: 20AA+, Early application. I think you are good.

SBU: There are only 35 seats(?). I did not hear of anyone below a 23AA get an invite unless they were URM. Their avg gpa is also about 3.7. I think Calc is a requirement so you would need to retake.

Overall I think your chances are good if you get a 20+ at NYU and Buffalo.

I got an invite, not URM, your average white girl... with a 20AA and last year too with 18AA to Stony as previously posted. Didn't get accepted but still got invited both years....

Im surprised u didnt get into any school first time. Im sure u at least had a nyu acceptance and decided to wait another cycle for state school?

I was picky about where I applied since I didn't feel as if NYU was an affordable option, so I didn't apply there.... so who knows if I would have been accepted. You're better off aiming for an above average DAT so you don't have to worry. Something I wish I did the first time around.

You're getting ahead of yourself. Do your best on your DAT first and then gauge where you're at.

I would say yes to retaking calculus. I believe schools don't accept D/F for pre-requisite courses.

If I were to rank the competitiveness of admission, I'd probably rank 1) Stony 2) Buffalo 3) NYU. But here's my 2 cent. When it comes time to designate schools, question yourself: "Would I attend the school if it is the only school that has accepted me?". I'm just getting a feeling from your post that you are going to limit yourself to NY state/east coast schools when you should really open up your choices.
