Getting into BS/DDS (BS/DMD). Seeking advice

My daughter is a high school junior. She is seriously thinking about the dental career and she already started shadowing at few clinics. So far so good ;-) We are thinking about the accelerated BS/DDS (BS/DMD) program, and luckily, we have one in our state.

She is a straight A student, few extracurriculars including Tutors for Tumors student club, growing number of shadowing hours. What else would you recommend to boost her application? I read an opinion that the "applicant mush deeply and authentically engage in med-related activities". But what else could be added for high schooler besides shadowing? Any advice welcome. Thanks

It's okay to check in with the admissions teams at the undergrad and the dental school involved with the BS/DMD-DDS program. Remember that you need to clear the hurdle of undergrad admissions with a special interest in being involved with the dental school. Find out what the relationship is between those in the BS-phase vs. those who transitioned to the dental school and what those students feel are the most supportive resources in making that transition.

Solid grades in the sciences also helps. I don't know if you have to take the DAT, but I presume you may need to.

Well.. just make sure she really wants to do this career. I wouldn't worry too much about boosting the application. The easy part is getting into dental school. The hard part is being a dentist.

Totally agree. And while getting to the BS/DMS program is super tough, the program awards BS in molecular biology to those who give up after 3 years. Also, as far I understand, there are few things which you can do with DMD

Have her shadow a variety of MD primary care and specialists. If she's a bright good student in theory she's competitve for the direct BS/MD programs and that is absolutely the way in terms of debt to income and good base salaries. Dental specialists are mostly fine but general dentistry is hard work and a not amazing pay as an associate
