Hi everyone,

If I could get some advice on this topic. I'm a nontraditional and taking Calculus this semester but it's been about 6 years since I've taken pre-calc. I don't remember a lot of trig functions, etc and I'm struggling right now. I'm reviewing as much as I can but I don't think I can catch up before the first exam. Should I withdraw and take the W? Or do the best I can and take a lower grade?
I've taken Biostats and pre-calc, so I figured it will fill my math requirements. But then this semester I would only be enrolled in physics and orgo and not a full time student. Would this look bad to the adcoms?

Thanks a bunch!

I think most school would be pleased to see calc. Have you thought about getting a tutor??

Not sure what they think about not going full time. I only go half time however I work 40-50 hours a week in animal care.

Good luck!

Hi Ellie,

Another non trad here. 🙂 I took calculus this summer; and even with pre-calc under my belt from last fall, I found it to be one of the HARDEST courses ever!!

One thing saved me though - there's an AMAZING guy who lives in Texas and bless him, he's got online tutoring videos. Check him out - he helped me so much!! Heck, he helped me so much that I sent him a check at the end of the summer simply to say thanks! 😀

There's also a video for morale that I found helpful (in a sick sort of way) - especially when I was ready to use my text book as a projectile!! +pissed+

And, if you can manage to get your hands on any of the Thinkwell lectures, the guy who teaches them is fabulous. The issue is that most of the stuff on the web is truncated, so you don't get the whole thing.

GOOD LUCK!!! :luck:

Thank you so much LMMS! I see a glimmer of hope now after driving myself crazy trying to review this on my own. I always know to turn to SDN for hope and answers. 😍 I appreciate it a lot! Thanks again!

Hi Ellie,

I really do hope they helped!! Especially with taking physics and o-chem at the same time. Yikes!!

Hang in there!! 🙂

last year I took Calc II, having not taken Calc I (or any other math courses) in exactly 5 years.
and when I did take Calc I, i ended up with a 55 or so.

Calc II took a bit of extra work but I ended up doing really well in it..
I wouldn't be afraid of a math course..
Often profs will very briefly go over material you are assumed to know from previous courses (at least the material that is relevant/needed for what you're learning now)

With a little extra effort, I wouldn't worry at all about Calc

This helped me a ton as well..
seriously do not overlook this advice

Your advice was priceless. Those videos were excellent. My test was 3 days away and I was completely lost but after watching those videos, I caught up instantly. Shockingly I ended up doing really well on my exam and I only got points taken off because of silly arithmetic errors. (Calculators were not allowed....) I will probably send him a donation as well...he deserves it.
