Hey everyone,

so I am in the midst of respiratory in physio. I have had physio before but respiratory is not my strongest area. I am debating between reading West's Respiratory or just the respiratory chapter in BRS. Any suggestions or opinions? (I've actually heard BRS has more in depth info than West... any truth to this?) Thanks.

I wouldn't use either. I haven't seen the West book, but if you have problems understanding the material than a review book is not your answer. You'll want a full text, like Costanzo or Guyton/Hall to give you explanations so can really understand whats going on. Review books like BRS are good for "review" and refreshing your memory on things you have already learned.

Costanzo's full text vs. Guyton/Hall

Why is Guyton freaking ~950 pages yet Costanzo manages a full textbook with ~425 pages? What gives? Our school uses Guyton, but I'm thikning about switching to Costanzo's full text because getting through a chapter of Guyton is too time consuming. I mean, don't get me wrong, Guyton is freaking god when it comes to explaining physio, it just takes sooo long to get through it.

I would agree with BIG Constanzo if I hadnt had physio before. I am just looking for whatever is a better refresher book.

No way am I reading Guyton. I go reference Guyton if I dont understand something. I think to sit down and read Guyton is a huge time waster. Def good for reference to clear up concepts though.

Any other opinions on BRS vs West?

Yeah, everyone at my school says to read Guyton for the Cardio and Renal stuff since 2 of our lecturers for that portion actually did work with Guyton in the 70's or whatever. Uggh, as soon as this block is over I am moving onto Big Costanzo for respiratory and the rest of physio.

BRS is great. I recommend that, for sure. I don't own West, but those who do have never used it in favor of BRS, as far as I'm aware.

Costanzo's regular textbook, not BRS is the way to go. No question.

Although getting BRS for the questions is good.

Yeah, Guyton is way too long. There is so much info that by the time I finish reading a chapter I know nothing. I have to go over my notes again and read BRS to jog my memory from the Guyton reading.

I like Costanzo's text a lot too. Also, doing as many practice questions as you can really helps cement stuff in your mind.

Anyone's professors suggested Rhodes? Mine did, like an idiot I bought it, and it's just plain awful (reads like a biochem text).

Oh I agree big Costanzo over Guyton if you just want to read. Although some people in my class swore by Guyton, it would take a longer time committment. If what you need is just a refresher than BRS physio ftw. You are probably going to use it for the boards anyways, and the end of chapter questions are good too (not for board practice). Your first post sounded like you needed more than a refresher. You should read the chapter in big Costanzo. She also made a cases and problems book which is really good-helps you apply physio concepts clinically.

At a glance books are awesome for concepts

I think Guyton is worth the read if you are a fast reader. But for slow readers like myself, it isn't the most efficient use of time.

West + BRS. I still use West to this day. It's been helpful for ICU/critical care when trying to understand the physiology behind vent settings and acid-base status.

Meh, if you're a fast reader, use that ability to get through the BRS more times. That'll be way better than just trying to see the material in an absurd amount of depth once.

Did you use Big Costanzo at all? Or straight BRS phys?

I've read some of big Costanzo. I didn't really spend much time with it, though, so I don't have much of an opinion either way. Everyone says it's great, so maybe using only the BRS means I'm missing out.

BRS is good with a more in-depth reference (or the web) to cross reference things you want more info on.
