Advice For Rescinding Acceptance

Does any one have any advice for how one would go about withdrawing their acceptance from a program after a deposit has been submitted? What do you say and who do you send the correspondence to? Can it be done via email? Any and all advice is very much appreciated. Thanks!!
 
I will be withdrawing my acceptance at a school I already submitted a deposit to as well. I plan on just calling the department and asking them how to do so. I already withdrew my name from a waitlist at another university by calling and it was no problem.
 
Thanks for your reply. Was your withdrawal before or after you received a financial aid package? Also, what did you say exactly when you called? Did they ask you specific questions?
 
I'm going to be going through the same thing as well. I know many programs (or at least the one that I'm going to be withdrawing from) require it in writing, but I don't think it has to be anything long/fancy.

If email, will you send it to the director or the assistant to the director (who in my case has been my main point of contact).
 
I did both - I sent an email to the admissions coordinators that I had been in contact with prior to hearing from the program. I also sent a hard copy via regular mail to the admissions office. With both the email and the hard copy, I kept it short, light, and made sure to thank them for the opportunity.

Not to beat a dead horse I just want to ensure I do this the right way and with the most respect as possible, I have not been in touch with any admissions people just the Director of the program and the assistant to the director. In your opinion, how should I move forward? Should I email both of them and then send a hard copy letter to the OT department as well? Or email the Director/Assistant and send a hard copy letter to the Admissions department? I appreciate your advice.
 
I definitely don't know the 100% correct answer, but I think that you could email and address it to both the Director and their assistant in the same email to let them know. In your email, you could also ask if they would prefer you to send a hard copy to the admissions office/who to direct it it to?

I think the most important thing is to just make sure to let anyone that you have worked with/emailed/asked questions that you appreciated the information that they gave to you throughout the application process.

Like OTK said, I'm probably going to email them with my withdrawal first and then ask if they require it in a formal letter. I've just been in touch with a graduate admisssions counselor at the school that I'm withdrawing from, so I'll most likely end up emailing him, but I would think that whoever you had the most contact with regarding admissions would probably be your best bet...is there any contact information at the bottom of your acceptance letter?

There isn't. Just a letter from the Dean of the whole university but it was boiler plate and not something I would consider a direct contact. Thank you again everyone, you've given some great advice. Good luck to you all!

They were incredibly kind and it was followed up by a survey email where I had a chance to explain in more detail (if I chose to) why I decided on another school.
They receive these emails all the time. Do not let it freak you out too much. We had a girl accepted to my program who simply never showed up, now that sucks. Good luck! Just express your appreciation and be professional. They have someone on the waiting list who will be thrilled to now have that chance to to take the position and the sooner the better.
