Advice from those who have flown out to interviews

First interview I've had to fly out for is on Wednesday. I've been informed that a garment bag for my suit will count as my carry on bag. So I'll have to check my suitcase for $25 each way 🙁 Has anyone found a way around this? Thanks!

Garment bag did not count as my suite, and I have traveled 5 times already, I just kind of strattle hug it in your arms as you enter the plane, in addition to this make sure the addional bag you bring, can comfortably fit in the stow away compartment, a big bag will attract attention, keep it small, its only one night remember....I did backpack + suit hanger..GL

Some airplanes have closets for suits..you can ask. It didn't count for me as my carry on.

There are ways to fold a suit without wrinkling it. Look it up on YouTube. That's what I did and it worked.

He's right about that. I bring my express or banana republic suit bag and my backpack to all 7 of my interviews.

What I usually do is bring like 5 hangers and put all my shirts and suit in the bag. It's better to do that so you would have more space for your backpack. Most suit bags have a small hole at the bottom where u can hook the top portion so you can fold the bag in half. I always put my suit bag on top of the compartments and keep my backpack in front of me.

See! It works good! Just make sure you roll up with confidence, and don't leave your suit on the plane, and then attempt to run back on to the plane to get it once you left it, major security breach, some of us learn the hard way...

If it ever gets wrinkled, hang your suit in the shower and turn on hot water so it can steam up. Minutes later it gets UN-wrinkled and problem solved lmao

If anyone brings a carry on, suit bag, AND backpack what u need to do is check in at the electronic kiosks and proceed normally. After passing security go see your flight attendants at YOUR gate and tell them you want to check your bag. They do it for free and VOILA!

They think you are courteous enough to give up your space for others and wait at the baggage claim area.

i have had to fly to four. I always take the garment bag and a backpack. I have not been charged yet

I use the folding method from Youtube and haven't had an issue yet with my suit being wrinkled. And I pack my suit in a duffel bag, which is probably the absolute worst, most wrinkle-inducing way to pack it, but I don't have any other carry-on size baggage. My pants got vaguely wrinkled once so I just quickly ironed them at the hotel. Steaming your suit (BRIEFLY) in the bathroom is also a good idea, but don't leave it in there more than a few minutes or it'll get soggy and will smell weird.

Thanks everyone for your input! You just saved me $50!! I think I am going to go with the rolling technique for the suit, and bring my small suitcase. I don't think this semi-high maintenance female can make it through an interview with just a backpack full of stuff! 🙂

I have this bag and its awesome. I fit my suit, a day or two of clothes, all toiletries, dress shoes, my netbook, school work, all chargers, snacks and itinerary with room to spare. Its 149 on their website, but mine was 99 at Men's Warehouse. My suit barely wrinkles since it is rolled instead of folded, hanging it up while I shower has been more than enough to get all wrinkles out at interviews. The bag fits in overhead compartments and you can squeeze it under the seat in front of you if they run out of room in overhead.

Lol I wrote a lot about my bag, but I really do like it!

Can you travel with Jetblue from where you are? They have free first bag. I also signed up for the jet blue card and as a new customer I've gained lots of points, enough for free one way flight from East to West coast.

I think that'd be fine. That's what my mom told me to do, actually. I just hate the idea of spilling something on my suit. I am the messiest eater ever, though, so normal people would probably be fine.

I've folded my suit and put it in a normal gym bag with the rest of my (minimal) items. One carry on. Whip it out at the hotel and hang it. No wrinkles, no problems, no check-in, no fees.

I fly Southwest and have traveled multiple times with a small suitcase, a backpack, and a garment bag with my suit, shirt(s), and tie(s). I've had no problems whatsoever.

Not sure if this helps, but when you unroll your suit, depending on the material, if you put it in the bathroom and run some super hot water in the shower for like 5-10 min while you're showering, it takes out the smell from the airport and can open up some minor wrinkles. It's like a hot steaming effect. And then you just bring it into the bedroom and hang it for a few hrs. It's worked pretty well for me.

I dunno, airplanes always has this particular smell, like plastic and industrial like and I dislike it.

I admit I do the same thing, however I would caution that it will lessen the life of your suit to steam it too often. In the past I have had a suit pop a seam and my tailor told me it was from the steaming. They also slowly lose their shape when you steam the whole garmet, especially in the shoulders, however a really good presser can put some of that shape back in.
