Hey all,

Anyone have any additional information on these particular transitional programs?

St Vincents (NY)
St. Barnabas (NJ)
Atlantic Health (NJ)
Maimonides (NY)

any input is appreciate...thanks

I interviewed at Maimonides transitional year.

Pros:

6 months are like a vacation
No OB/Gyn (website is not up to date)
Subsidized housing in Brooklyn = cheap
The transitionals are happy

Cons:

6 months are hellish, particularly 2 months of surgery at Coney Island Hospital
Kosher cafeteria: no cheeseburgers

i liked atlantic health, interviewed there a couple weeks ago
the program director is really nice
its fairly competitive and the residents there seem really happy

schedule:
4 blocks im floor, 1 block micu, 1 block amb med, 1 block er, 1 block - 2 weeks day float (weekends only im floor and weekdays bioskills lab)/2 weeks night float, 1 block selective, 3 blocks electives, 1 block vacation split in 2 weeks

good points:
only 4 blocks of med floor
4 weeks vacation
new "selective block" - can choose to do a surgery block or take it easy with ambulatory medicine (in addition to already existing amb med block)
subsidized housing near hospitals - either in summit or morristown
could take the train to and from and not have a car if you like
available and funded international electives
affiliation with mt sinai for electives etc.
good food - ate at the cafeteria for interview day lunch

bad points:
2 of your blocks of med are spent at morristown which is hard in terms of pt load and call etc.
icu could be at morristown or overlook you don't necessarily decide
north jersey - not exactly the hippest, trendiest, funnest of locations

I interviewed there as well and agree with everything ophtho girl wrote.

Just want to add that the PD is REALLY nice. I mean one of those human beings you just want to hug b/c he's so damn nice...

Having said that I'm ranking them a bit lower on my list b/c of location.
