Hi everybody
Could you plz tell me that can we apply for PGY-1 next year after finishing the prelim in IM , in some other hospital.( for example i get into a prelim position in a community hospital this year , then the next year i apply again for PGY1 in university based program ) . By this one can increase his chances of getting residency in a better university based program with 1 yr hands-on experience during prelim.
Is it possible?

Yes, it is possible, but there are some problems:

1. You will need to interview for the match in Dec/Jan. Your PGY-1 schedule may not be flexible enough for you to do so. I imagine many Prelim PGY-1's will have this same idea, and want the same time to interview.
You will need to generate LOR's by Oct-Nov, which is usually not a huge problem but can be if you have any difficulty acclimitizing to the program.

2. There is a medicare funding issue which is reviewed in multiple other threads. This usually will not stop you from matching into a program, but could be a problem.

3. Some IM programs will not be interested in repeating your PGY-1 year, hence you might need to search for PGY-2 spots. This is much more complicated as there is no central list of open PGY-2 spots.

4. Some competitive university programs may not be impressed by a community hopistal PGY-1 year, ut you would certainly be more competitive for a community based categorical program.

thanks for the advice
even if it increases the chance for getting into uni based program a little, still it's worthy
