Advice appreciated.
I'm an MS3. I was planning on devoting the whole year next year to research to build my academic credentials in research. As my long term goal is to be in the academics, I thought it would be a good year for me to build experience. Plus, my first year academic record not being very strong, I thought a few publications during that year would not hurt in that regard either.
Problems came up when some faculty members at my school advised me against this plan, saying that instead I should work on getting a degree during that year such as an MPH degree. However, I have no interest in public health, and trying to finish a two year program in one year, I doubt I will have any significant time to devote to research.
What do you guys think? Should I consider pursuing a degree during this year off? would a full year of research alone be seen negatively?
Any other comments on how to make next year off better would be appreciated.
