I just found out yesterday that I got accepted to my #1 choice. I have 2 interviews coming up this week, but now that I've already been accepted to my #1 choice, I don't see the point in even going to these interviews. Is it too late to cancel these interviews? One is on Tuesday and the other is Friday. The Friday one, I already rescheduled once due to the snow over the past week or so. I know it will probably seem unprofessional and disrespectful if I call and cancel the interviews now, but I just don't see the point in spending the money to travel to attend the interviews if I know I am not going to attend these schools. HELP! What do you guys think?

Just cancel, people cancel all the time so it is really not a big deal. Also congrats

If you go to the interviews knowing you don't want to attend you are wasting not only your time and money but also the school's time and money. Also, you would be taking an interview spot away from some other person who may very well want to go.

I can see why you think it is unprofessional. You obviously are a very conscientious person. But sometimes people that are conscientious can be too polite, to the detriment of all, including themselves. Call FIRST THING in the morning and explain that you have made a choice based on just having received news of an acceptance and you did not want to take up their time if they might be able to fill your interview spot with a local candidate. Thank them for the opportunity nevertheless.

I think if you do this that in fact admissions personnel would view your actions as being very professional versus not professional.

Congratulations on getting in to your number one choice! So where are you headed?

I agree you should call and politely cancel the others. That may open a spot for someone else and there is no point spending your time and money and their time on an interview that is really pointless.

I know it seems unlikely, but you might see something that may change your mind about your #1 school if you find out something else about your other choices.

They probably have scheduled all of the applicants they are willing to interview, so I don't see how having one person cancel would make them schedule someone they originally did not plan to interview.

This could be a good experience to ask questions about the school in case the OP knows people who might apply there in the future.

Again, how are they going to pick just one more applicant to interview out of many that they chose to not interview?

I hope you realize it may look really bad to call a school just days before a scheduled interview. To them, it seems like you waited so long until few days before they were expecting the applicant just to cancel when they were preparing. That can say few things actually:

  • The applicant did not feel prepared, and wanted to cancel instead of rescheduling
  • The applicant decided he/she wanted to not attend the interview, but waited so long to contact the school

I think if you do this that in fact admissions personnel would view your actions as being very professional versus not professional.

Definitely call to cancel. I interviewed at my #1 school almost a month ago and got another interview at a school I don't particularly want to go to, but I want to have options. I am counting on hearing from my #1 school this week or next, and I planned the other interview in April so I could cancel if I got in. Also, you may make someone's day if they call up a student whose #1 choice is one of the schools you are interviewing at to invite them to take your interview spot. =)

I was accepted to my #2 choice, so I canceled all my interviews except for my #1. I just e-mailed them. They thanked me for notifying them and wished me good luck. Except for Creighton, she really gave me a guilt trip... she said she was disappointed in me! 🙁

e-mail to cancel, one line will do it, no big deal. happens all the damn time.
