Im seeking some advice regarding the approach to Rads for the upcoming 2004 match. Im kind of caught in a dilemma regarding what I shall chose for my pgy1 year when knowing that I most probably wont land a rads residency right out of med school. Although this post is lengthy..I would appreciate it if anyone with exerience could lend some help.
WHICH IS A BETTER ROUTE AMONG THE TWO: PRELIM MED OR CATEGORICAL IM?
1. If i chose a Prelim Med spot Ill have the advantage of having more elective opportunities, which I hope to use for Rads. (assuming If I got a prelim spot where they also have Rads, then doing Rads electives and working with the department could increase my chances.....as opposed to doing a Categrical IM where I can only do 1 or 2 months of electives). Whats your take on this? This true?
2. Do most pgy2 programs look what type of program an applicant is applying from assuming he's a resident? I assume it doesnt look good on an applicant for him to apply right away in the first year of categorical IM. Ironically, athough you dont have any security in a prelim spot if you dont get Rads the following year, can a prelim standing give you a better angle as an applicant knowing that you have nothing definite to fall back on after the prelim year? Last but not least, If during the prelim year someone does get Rads, is it impossible for them to begin right after their prelim year or do they have to wait for the following year?
I ultimately want Rads and nothing ese and willing to try for the next 2 years or so. If I get it I would take it at any program, and in any location. Im just looking for the most constructive pathway to make myself competitive enough next year or the following providing I dont get it now.
Thanks for your patience!
