Stats: VA resident, sGPA: 3.6, cGPA 3.6, MCAT: 514.

II: Virginia Tech, Univeristy of Central Florida, West Virginia

I have only interviewed at Virginia Tech so far and I will be interviewing at the other two schools soonish. I don't have any other IIs. How am I looking?

An interview of three a doctor you'll be. So goes the saying, however this depends on your interview skills. Don't worry about applying to other schools just focus on your interview skills before your next two.

If you can't get into a VA MD school, something is very wrong. How did you manage UCF ii with a VA residence???????

This is music to my ears... Just because it's more difficult to get into an OOS school with no ties doesn't mean it's impossible and you can't get in to an OOS school if you don't apply, sir. 😉

You can't look at that. You have to look at the % of OOS applying vs those matriculated.

UCF had roughly the same amount of OOS and IS applicants (2400), and matriculated 89 IS vs 32 OOS. Really not a huge disparity in those odds, definitely not one to deter someone with good stats from applying just because they are OOS.

I know with 100% certainty I have seen some of the other adcom's that post on here say that OOS friendly is >15% of the class being made up of OOS.

My apologies, I wrote the wrong thing! One has to look at # of applicants vs # of IIs.
So we have
IS : 2400/300 = 12.5%

OOS: 2469/126 = 5%

That's still not too bad. Many thanks, Stallion, for keeping me honest. I will add UCF to my list of schools.

So jealous, UCF is my #1 choice

I am a non trad with a unique work experience. I have no idea why I got a II from UCF. I think it was the MCAT but I don't really know. I used wedgedawg's (probably spelled this wrong) excel spreadsheet to figure out which medical schools to apply to. UCF was listed on it because it accepts a fair number of OOS. I applied to 31 medical schools.

Question for you Goro. I have been gunning for VCU since day 1. I took the effort to meet with the dean several times in person before sending in my application. And It was the first medical school I applied to (mid July). But I haven't heard ANYTHING from the school. Do you think it is weird that I haven't heard back from VCU?

You and several thousand other people want to go there

Those stats are Very MD friendly. Definitely stay away from DO at this point.

VCU is weird in that they assign you a rank in your online portal which basically determines your chance of getting an interview. Have you checked your portal recently? It's possible that your status may have been updated.

Even the assigned rank is not an accurate predictor for an interview invite. Some applicants had the "very interested' status only to be rejected shortly after. While others had no status changes and then had an interview tab appear on their portal without any notification.

Interesting. May have changed since 2014, where all the people I know irl who applied (I'm a VA resident) basically were able to predict yes/no interview invite based on status. Strange that they'd be making it more difficult to decipher.

I wish that was still true. I've been sitting with the "we will review your application" status for 3 1/2 months now with no other updates. I have survived a few rejection rounds already, but the future does not seem so bright either.

Well, as you have said, it's cryptic and probably not worth reading into too much. Best of luck!
