Hey Everyone,
I'm hoping to receive some guidance.
After listening to everyone else in my life (instead of my own better judgment), I applied to medical schools this cycle. Stats: 3.59 c, 3.43 sci, MCAT 497, URM/disadvantaged, 27 y/o. I feel terrible overall. I made a few mistakes on my application too (i.e. not claiming disadvantaged status when I qualified, lackluster PS and activity essays, and a few items left uncorrected).
I am in the process of applying to post bacc programs that offer MCAT prep on top of graduate/medical school level courses. While studying for the MCAT, I felt that I needed a fully immersive experience making these programs a perfect fit.
However, a part of me does not think that I'll be successful in gaining admission into medical school after completing the program due to my prior application and MCAT score (even after retaking). I just want to know whether I have a genuine chance of success if I go down this route. I have the immense fear of failing and being stuck with a degree that won't aid in the advancement of my career. Before spending a lot of money, I just need some advice on how to move forward.
ECs:
6 years unpaid caregiver to family member w/ dementia
Honors College - Presidential Scholarship, Honors Society, Pre-health club member
150 hrs ED volunteer (1.5 yrs), 1000+ hrs ED Scribe (1.5yrs), 1700+ hrs AmeriCorps (1yr), 300 hrs teacher's aide (4 mons), 400 hrs Summer Research
Upcoming: EMT-B Cert, New Hobby: Improv
In addition, do you think undergrad matters? I graduated from an unranked school and I feel as though my accomplishments are diminished due to attending the school.
On a side note, my GPA dipped during my Junior year due to the death of my family member and the emotional toll that it took on myself and our family.
Thank you for the advice.
Edit: I applied to Morehouse MSMS, Tulane Cell & Molecular Biology, and Drexel MS Biomedical Studies program.
