Hey Everyone,

I'm hoping to receive some guidance.

After listening to everyone else in my life (instead of my own better judgment), I applied to medical schools this cycle. Stats: 3.59 c, 3.43 sci, MCAT 497, URM/disadvantaged, 27 y/o. I feel terrible overall. I made a few mistakes on my application too (i.e. not claiming disadvantaged status when I qualified, lackluster PS and activity essays, and a few items left uncorrected).

I am in the process of applying to post bacc programs that offer MCAT prep on top of graduate/medical school level courses. While studying for the MCAT, I felt that I needed a fully immersive experience making these programs a perfect fit.

However, a part of me does not think that I'll be successful in gaining admission into medical school after completing the program due to my prior application and MCAT score (even after retaking). I just want to know whether I have a genuine chance of success if I go down this route. I have the immense fear of failing and being stuck with a degree that won't aid in the advancement of my career. Before spending a lot of money, I just need some advice on how to move forward.

ECs:

6 years unpaid caregiver to family member w/ dementia
Honors College - Presidential Scholarship, Honors Society, Pre-health club member
150 hrs ED volunteer (1.5 yrs), 1000+ hrs ED Scribe (1.5yrs), 1700+ hrs AmeriCorps (1yr), 300 hrs teacher's aide (4 mons), 400 hrs Summer Research

Upcoming: EMT-B Cert, New Hobby: Improv

In addition, do you think undergrad matters? I graduated from an unranked school and I feel as though my accomplishments are diminished due to attending the school.

On a side note, my GPA dipped during my Junior year due to the death of my family member and the emotional toll that it took on myself and our family.

Thank you for the advice.

Edit: I applied to Morehouse MSMS, Tulane Cell & Molecular Biology, and Drexel MS Biomedical Studies program.

Which URM group do you belong to ? If Hispanic are you fluent in Spanish? Which schools did you apply to and did you receive any interviews ? Where is your state of residence?

I am Haitian-American (my parents are immigrants). Naturally, I am bilingual speaking both English and Haitian Kreyol (I don't think that this language fluency is relevant to a particularly large population; so, I don't know how it's perceived). I am an Illinois resident.

I applied to MD programs and ran out of resources before I could tackle DO due to unexpected medical expenses. However, I applied to Howard, Loyola, Morehouse, Oakland Beaumont, and UIC with pure silence ever since. I know that UIC has a UIC COM - PAP program for URM applicants but its invite only (If I get rejected, I hope to hear from them). I'm tempted to email the program to show interest.

I was rejected from Rush and SIU pre-secondary for what I suspect was MCAT related. I did not fill out secondaries for Meharry and Rosy Franklin due to issues with resources.

If you increase your MCAT score to at least 500 your chances would increase significantly. You should also apply more broadly to both DO and MD schools and apply in June and submit all your secondaries by July. I suggest these MD schools with your current stats:
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
UCLA Drew
UIC
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
Quinnipiac
New York Medical College
Seton Hall
Drexel
Temple
George Washington
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Creighton
St. Louis
You could receive interviews at these DO schools with your current MCAT of 497.
ACOM
ARCOM
NYIT-Arkansas
BCOM
UIWSOM
WCU-COM
LMU-DCOM
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
MU-COM
VCOM (all 3 schools)
CUSOM
PCOM Georgia and South Georgia
LUCOM
LECOM (all schools)
Most of these schools have MCAT medians in the 498 to 502 range so you could receive interviews at any of them.
If you retake the MCAT do not retake until your practice score are consistently 505 and higher.
