Hey,

Ok heres the deal, i took my math midterm and i am pretty sure that i got an F, and we just have a mid term and a final and unless i do some magical thing on the final, of which i doubt will happen, i think i will screw that up also. So i might end up with a F or maybe a C, but its not looking good, that C is probably unlikely, so now should i withdraw from the class and take it again next term, or should i stick with it and get whatever grade i get, granted if i get a c or below i would need to retake it anyway since its part of my major. Also how do adcoms look at W's on transcripts. I am on the quarter sysem and i have 16 credits right now with the math class, if i drop it i will have 12. I also did study a lot for this test like i do for all my tests. Also if i do drop it, i will still go to lecture and sit in and try and learn the material cause i would be taking it again.

Thanks,

I'm not sure in an F or a W is better. Either way you'll need to retake it and you'll probably have to explain either to adcoms. The good news is one F or W won't keep you out of med school. Don't get any more and spin it into a story about how you learned something about youself when you have to explain it in interviews.

A couple of suggestions:
1. Go talk to your professor and see what you can do to get a decent grade. Explain you've been studying and doing your homework (I sincerely hope you have!)
2. Go to Academic Services and request a tutor. This should be provided free of charge to you - it's a work-study position for the tutors. Take advantage of it.

If you can get a C instead of an F or a W, I'd say that's the way to go.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of math are you talking about? If you have trouble with calculus, or trig or even algebra I would say just get a tutor and they should be able help you understand it a little better. Now if you're having trouble with math, as in basic college math, you might have a long row to hoe once you get to your upper division math classes. Regardless though, just keep after it, even if it means retaking, and eventually you will divide and conquer! 😉

Let me put it lightly. TAKE THE W!!! A W does nothing to your GPA, but an F will affect it. Also, unless you need it for your major, drop the class, as there is no need to be taking integral calc if you aren't going to do well.

Definitely take a W over an F. The F will sink your gpa like the titanic, and amcas averages retakes...so if you get a 4 unit F, and retake and get an A, that's like getting an 8 unit C. VERY VERY bad for the gpa.

Withdraw...An F will kill your GPA, and no one cares if you have a couple W's on your transcript. If you are a freshman, you can give that as an excuse as to why you dropped the class.

I dropped Physics, even though I will be taking the same class again the next semester, I still felt that I failed. But I found that the sooner you get out, the more time you can devote to your other classes. IN the end, I knew I made a good decision so WITHDRAW!

GOBUCKY!

I withdrew from one class my freshman year of college long before I was even considering med school. It never came up in any of my interviews and it didn't seem to hurt me. As other people mentioned, a W doesn't affect your gpa but an F can kill it. I'd recommend withdrawing. As long as you don't get too many W's, no one will care.

Hey
I actually have the same issue but it was with simple calculus - integration stuff. So I dont know where you go to school, but at UCLA, if you get an F you can retake the class. The F will remain on your transcript affecting your GPA UNTIL you take the class over. So I took the F, took the class over next quarter and still pulled just a C. I figured hey oh well, Im not a math major, I just dont get integration and I moved on.

On my transcript, it says that I took the math class the quarter I got an F but there is no longer and F, just a blank space. Not even a W. AND no one has asked me about it on my interviews and Ive been to like 11. I dont know if thats a bad thing...........maybe I was supposed to say something about it.....hmmmmmmmmm. oh well.

So yeah, see if your school has a policy where if you get an F, you can just replace it with your grade when you retake it. i think this looks better than a W. If not, just work your butt off and pull at least a C.

Clarissa :luck:
