Hey guys, I try to keep my identity consealed for privacy reasons, but I wanted to get some opinions nevertheless. I have had a rough 24hrs with the passing of my grandmother, but it isnt over yet. We (my wife, daughter and myself) are living with me parents due to financial reasons. With the passing of my grandmother, my parents are bringing my grandfather back to take care of, but this basically forces us out of their home. My wife has not been able to get a job and taking out additional money is almost financial suicide with other student loans I have. I am not sure what to do....forget school and get my job back or is this dream worth a total of aarox. 350k over the next for yrs (taking into account money for living expenses)? I am set on going into primary care.

Oh, and I am also a relatively older nontrad.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother passing.

Few things:

- Is your wife able to get a job sometime in near future? You said she hasn't been able to get a job now, but will she be able to by, let's say, end of this year?

- You're older so I assume you have enough life experiences to figure out whether or not medicine is your calling. This is a better time than any to really solidify how you feel about medicine.

- Why are you set on going into primary care? Reason I ask is because it's somewhat unusual to hear somebody, who will be in above-average debt, have their heart set on primary care.

- I assume by your username that you're at PCOM. Have you talked to the Dean about this? If not, you need to right away. He will let you know of your options as far as coming back in future should you want to come back.

I don't want to tell you what decision you should make in this situation because I want you to decide that on your own. Hopefully I've helped you look at the situation from somewhat a different perspective.

Again, sorry to hear about your loss! She is in a better place. :luck:

Many many hospitals/rural practices in usually smaller towns will pay a significant chunk of your loans off if you sign with them for a number of years. Get flexible with where you are going, and your primary care dreams are still doable.

Miliary - you could sign with them to get the rest of school paid for. Depending on what year you are -this might be a good choice.

FAP with military - you pick your specialty and get extra money during residency that you will do with them. Many think this is better than HPSP actually.

Just some ideas for you....
