Hi Fellow Pediatricians, Happy 2013. Just wanted advice..I would really like to apply for a fellowship but wanted advice on which fellowship has good job/research opportunities in the near future. Currently, I am done with Gen Peds residency but very frusturated with job markets and also I miss training. I have seen my Peds friends due intensive fellowships and after not do their intended specialty focus and do general peds. Any advice is greatly appreciated. All the best to you this year!:luck:😀🙂😎

Virtually all of the pediatric subspecialties have good job and research opportunities, although potential job locations may be limited by specialty (for example, few opportunities outside of large hospitals or medical centers), and research depth can vary widely. Your experience is very different from mine, wherein hardly anyone I know who has done a Peds fellowship ended up doing general Peds instead. There are, however, some poorly compensated specialties where some people will do a hybrid position (part time in their specialty and part time in general peds). Some of these are specialties like nephrology, ID, and Child Protection.

In all honesty though, you'd probably be best served by figuring out what your interests are first, then using that to guide your fellowship choice, rather than going by job opportunities or research depth. A great position in a great location will still feel unpleasant if you're doing something you dislike.

This x100. Fellowship in any subspecialty can be pretty tough and if you're not interested in and dedicated to doing it, you'll be miserable (if you finish at all). I don't say this to be discouraging, but because I've seen people drop out of fellowship.

So what interests you? What do you really want to learn more about and even do some research in? For me, it was physiology, end of life care and life support technologies, so I went into critical care. There are job opportunities in most pediatric subspecialties so don't worry so much about that. What do you want to do in five or ten years?
