advice on ranking programs

Hi all,

I was wondering if I can get some input on my program ranking. Especially if you have heard/exerpeinced things at these programs

University of California-San Diego: got good vibes from the residents
University of Southern California: interview went well and got good vibes.
Cedars Sinai: got bad vibes from the program director but she is no longer there, the program emailed us perhaps a month ago
University of Miami Jackson: got good vibes, I worry about practicing here as I don't speak any Spanish
NYU: Ok vibes from the interview, but I worry about malignancy and having to draw my own labs etc as an intern..
Univ of Pittsburgh: great vibes!
University of Rochester, New York: poor vibes from the program director.
two HCA programs 1)Las Vegas: got great vibes! have ton of friends here. 2) Thousand Oaks California: got good vibes from this program as well.

Do you want to stay in CA long term?

If so, UCSD hands down should be number 1. HCA programs should be dead last.

Got it. I am not tied down to California to practice, I am open as long as the place is sunny and warm(California, Vegas, etc). have you heard anything about the California programs I listed in terms of poor treatment of residents?

Depends on what you mean by poor treatment. Many of those programs will work you hard but that doesn’t necessarily mean poor treatment.

I agree with you, Hard work is generally not poor treatment and I want to work hard in residency so that I can be the best attending I can be. I am talking about uncalled for yelling, bullying and behaviors of that variety.

If California then UCSD. Best program overall is UPMC. NYU is the third best . I think UCSD might be a tad better than nyu

if you want to stay in SoCal, definitely UCSD, Cedars, and USC. All three are good programs.

Cedars anesthesia department has gone through a lot of turmoil and turnover. That said, a lot of my coworkers trained there for residency and fellowship and are all solid.

USC uses Cerner instead of Epic if that’s any concern for you.

We have partners from all 3 places in our practice. They’re all good enough 🙂

The more important question is where you think you will be happy and how much effort you put in your training. Hands down I would rather hire a hard working person from a mediocre program than a lazy person from a top program. We don't need more LMA members( Lazy Motherf*cking anesthesiologists) 😱

Even if that is true and I’m not sure it is, OP should rank still them.

UCSD for sure should be one. It’s a great place to train I think. Between USC and Cedars is really what you’re looking for. I think USC is the usual work horse type program but very good. Cedars I think gives a lot more flexibility and even opportunity to learn echo etc. Pitt seems like a good place with everything. Same with Miami and nyu.

You should definitely rank every program. Anesthesia is competitive now
