Advice on Relocation after the Match

Spouse of m4 here who will need to find a new job where ever we end up after the match. Our families are not in any of the possible locations. We also moved to a new location for med school. How will you or your spouse in similar situations handle the question from potential employers?

1.) why are you moving here? you just moved 4 years ago (across the country) and are moving again?

2.) if you disclose that you are married and they ask "what does your spouse do for a living?" do you respond "physician"?

(small) concern of (1) is I appear to be a fugitive or something jumping from location to location. I could answer "because my spouse found a good job/opportunity", but then that leads to question (2).

Answering question (2) can lead the potential employer to think I will only be there for a few years until residency is over. Also, disclosing my spouse is a physician can lower my salary because of society's view that all physicians are filthy rich and we all know that is true, right? :laugh:

Insight on the above would be much appreciated.

seems pretty simple...and if they ask more, you can say "in health care" if you are afraid of answering "physician" although I don't think it would hurt you honestly. They shouldn't assume you would move again, nor should they assume you will stay...they may very well ask you "do you plan on moving in the future?" or "how long do you two plan on staying in this area".
How you choose to answer that ("for the forseable future") is up to you.
They might assume that now that your spouse is out of school and has a "job" you're staying. They don't have to know the "job" is residency.

I have to move to Rochester, MN. Any advice where to live near the Mayo Clinic would be a help. Thanks!
 
I've found the realtor.com website to be pretty useful. It doesn't list all the houses in a given market, nor does it show all the pictures for a given house it does list. But it does have other good information like which schools the house falls in, and what that school's greatschools.com rating is as well as mapping the property.

Any advice as to whether to buy or rent in residencyville?
 
I am always in favor of buying- which is what I am doing (even though we must sell our current place). The market is awesome to buy now... but not to sell.🙁

Right now, however, I am jealous of my classmates who only have a tiny apartment to move wherever- we have a 2000 sq ft home to move, sell, etc. across the country. It's a lot of work.:luck:

Generally 4 years is considered the point where you start pulling ahead financially. Really, it varies according to the market. I think you have to crunch the numbers for yourself in order to decide. That being said, the money that you "earn" in equity/appreciation from whatever home you own during residency is likely to pale in comparison to your attending salary. There is also a certain value to knowing that you are not responsible for upkeep, and that once residency is over you can wave buh-bye and not need to worry about selling it, closing dates, floating the mortgage until you have a buyer, etc.
