Hey everyone,

I'm a junior who plans on studying for the DAT in the spring semester (I'll start studying winter break). I don't want my schedule to be too intense, since I got shadowing too. Here's what I plan on taking:

-physics 2 (trig based) w lab
-general microbio w/ lab
-literature course on Greek mythology
- theology course: Christian marriage

I'd be at 14 credits. Physics isn't my best subject. I got an A right now but it still requires a lot of my time. If I don't take microbio, I wanna take an elective, such as histology w/ lab. What do you guys think? What's my best option?

Thanks in advance!

Histology will probably be just as tough as micro. And micro might actually be a bit useful on the DAT so I recommend that. Plus it's the more required of the two courses for dental schools.

Definitely take microbiology. Histology would also be great to have but not as valuable as microbiology.

What do you guys think about the difficulty? Is it fine/manageable?

Depends on your school really. At my school, English and Philosophy courses take like a LOT of time because there is so much reading involved. I know other schools in my area have easier Literature and Philosophy courses. But, if you know about those courses at your school then maybe it won't be too bad for you.

Yeah I know what you mean. The ones I'm taking are supposed to be easy/ not too much work. Only thing I'm concerned about is having time for DAT

I guess you would so long as you don't have a lot of trouble in those courses. If physics is manageable then go for it.

I'm taking physics I right now and do not plan to take physics II in the spring. It feels like a huge waste of time to just sit there listening to someone that talks about equations (my physics is calc-based). Since you'll be taking the DAT in the spring, I strongly recommend that you push physics to the summer. Get it done in one month, and don't worry about any of those materials because you'll never use them in your life. In the event that you do need to know the acceleration of uniform circular equation, you got google for that.

I agree with bottle. Take physics in the summer.

Try to take only 12 creds if you could swing it. Itll be less burdensome/stressful and less risky for your GPA and DAT score.

Summer isn't an option for me it's waaaay too much. I wish though...might have to go through with what I listed above

The more tough science classes you take, the more competitive your application will be. If the admissions committee sees that you're only taking 1 hours with micro as your only biology class, they'll wonder why you didn't do more. And shadowing isn't a great excuse, because most of their applicants are shadowing with 16+ hours of school. Take the tough classes now, micro and histo may help with your bio score on the DAT. Literature and theology will not, you can take those your last semester, after you found out you were accepted.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but a tough course load looks good. Plus it gives you practice for dental school.

But if I take a harder course load won't that affect my time to study for the DAT?

It probably will, but some classes can help your DAT score as well. Like another poster said, you can take physics over the summer, no rush for that class. But any biology or chemistry class will help. I was taking anatomy while studying for the DAT, which helped a lot. It's your call, just expressing my opinion. Remember, you don't have to study the DAT 8 hours a day or anything, 1 or 2 hours a day is great, too.
