Hey guys, this is my first post on here but I could use some advice. So I’m a bit untraditional, as I started out at a 4 year school but I didn’t do that great, especially in my pre reqs (got Bs and B- in bios, D in gen chem 1, withdrew from precalc twice) I then transferred to CC my sophomore year and retook gen chem 1 (got a B) and I took gen chem 2 (B-) but I also got a D in physics 1 there but an A in precalc. Junior year I transferred to a diff 4 year, and I started doing much better. I got a B in orgo1, And As in orgo 2, physics 1, biochem, and a few other lower level sciences required by my school. However, this semester (senior year) I don’t think I’m doing too great. I took genetics which I am most likely going to end with a C in and physics 2 I think I may end with a B. I think microbio I will end with an A. I’m feeling really upset and discouraged, I plan on taking anatomy during the summer and start DAT studying in the fall to apply next year. Did I screw myself over and mess up my chances?

You've had four years and three? institutions to show you can handle fundamental science prerequisites but always seem to have difficulty. What's going on? Are you fully focused when studying? Have you sought help from TA's or a learning center on campus(es)? Honestly, it will look like you're shopping for good grades and not getting anywhere. Who will write you strong science professor letters? You must retake your classes with D's (If you haven't already done so).

I think you need to take a break from pushing yourself to be a dentist. Don't take the DAT because if you do poorly, you'll have to overcome that too. I sense that your study skills need a lot of coaching, and you need to find a good tutor/learning specialist pronto. Don't think about being a dentist right now; master the prerequisites (which you are also getting clinical experience and some community service).

Not only does it look like you are “grade shopping”…it looks like when something gets difficult you quit and look for an easier option instead of adapting and pushing through. I don’t say this to be mean, but I would worry that this could be the way schools view it. If you are wanting to take the DAT, I would take it slow and don’t rush it. If it takes you 3 months or 6months to study for it, who cares? It’s more important that you do well on it the first time around, especially given your academic history.
