What did you guys do during the summer to help get into med school? I'm taking an EMT class right now so I can be a volunteer EMT during the school year and I'm doing a little bit of volunteering but I don't know what else I can do to add things to my application. (I though of research but I don't have enough sciences to be able to...)

Also, a surgeon I shadowed is actually on the admissions board of the medical school I want to apply to so I want to keep in touch with her but I have already shadowed two times and she has pretty much answered all my questions so I don't know how else to keep in touch with her to help get a recommendation from her. Any advice would be greatttly appreciated!

Do whatever it is that interests you. It's good that you're taking an EMT class. I took an EMT class two summers ago and have been volunteering since. It's a great job and you get great clinical experience as well.

With regards to the shadowing-just tell her you enjoyed shadowing her and would like to shadow her some more/want to learn more. After you get to know her well, request a letter from her. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much that really helped. Did you use your EMT volunteering together with hospital volunteering or did you just do EMT?

I did both. I was in a summer volunteer program while I was taking my EMT class (also volunteered in HS but that doesn't count, ha).

You can also use an EMT certificate to get involved with some really cool stuff, like wilderness medicine. On a side note, you sound like you're really on top of the admissions game. Good luck!

Oh what is wilderness medicine exactly? I'd love to look into that. I see that you're a med student already, what is the biggest thing that helped you get into the school you are at? I'd love to hear more about your experiences

Hospital volunteering from HS doesn't count...?

Well, the general rule of thumb is that you shouldn't be listing stuff from your HS experiences, unless you continued them throughout college. In my case, I switched hospitals for volunteering, so I didn't mention my volunteer experience in HS.

Small private practice offices may be struggling through some of these recent healthcare reform changes, so if you can offer something, they may welcome your help this summer.

Are you talented with technology? Maybe you can assist with electronic medical records.

Not talented with technology really but I'm a quick learner so I will give it a shot. Thanks for the advice
