so I just recently took the dat with only a few months to study and not much time to study as I am also taking microbiology and orgo II right now (I graduated from college already w. a business management major, just finishing prereqs). My scores were 16bio 18chem 16orgo 16ts 19rc 17qr 17aa 15pat. I know my scores aren't great, but I'm just wondering how bad they will affect my chances of getting in? Any advice would help, good or bad!! Thanks!

16 TS/ 17 AA is below the average DAT score of an accepted dental student, so I'd say it's hurting you more than it's helping at this point. Without any other information about the strength of your application it's hard to say much else about your chances as an applicant.

I agree with this comment. If you have a school in mind I would call them. Just looking at the scores I am afraid a retake is needed. To be competitive at most schools you need a 20AA 20TS and a 3.5 science GPA, but I have also seen students get in with less, many factors to be considered.

I will also comment that you had not finished the required courses when you took the DAT and that is never recommended and I am certain affected the outcome.

Good luck to you and I hope this helps..Nancy

well more info about me is that my gpa was a 3.2 science 3.3 i was a student athlete (basketball) at a division II school i have very strong letters of rec (according to the dean at my school as i obviously could not read them). I have a feeling I'm going to have to retake the dat i just don't want to wait another year.

With a 3.3 science GPA it is even more important you pull off some big numbers on the DAT, schools are generally a little more forgiving on the QR and PAT scores, but they take a hard look at the sciences and reading(Lots of reading in dental school) Because you have a great relationship with the dean of your school by all means talk to him or her. I am stating what is the norm for students getting in, there are always exceptions.

I think you should definitely retake.

I had a 17 AA, 17 TS and a 3.4 gpa my first time applying. I was not accepted anywhere. Retook the DAT scored a 23 AA 25 TS and now Ill be going in the fall. I hope that helps.

Goodluck!

thank you everyone for your replies! anyone know of anyone who's gotten in with scores like mine? or am i just completely ruled out for this cycle?

To answer your question, I have not personally seen anyone get accepted into dental school with those scores in recent years. In 2005 and before you would have had a fair shot for acceptance, but things have changed since that time and competition remains feirce . Again I strongly urge you to contact the schools and ask them, they are the one that makes the decisions.
