well it's 6:50 am and the scores are up. I got a 22P.
now the advice part. I'm pretty sure i'm going to retake the MCAT, but is theier any shot that I'll get in with a 22P and gpa of 3.11? My EC are very good. And I'm sure I'll interview well...but is it worth it?

thanks alot

I'm in the same boat and want other people's opinions. Somehow I did very poorly in the verbal (was getting 10's on all practice exams...hell got a 28 on my last kaplan practice test) and ended up getting a 20N. I have a 3.4 overall and science gpa with many volunteer experiences and have shadowed a DO. My thinking is this: if i retake in Aug and get a 24, I will be four months behind and still not have a great mcat score. Should I just apply now and hope for the best being that my application will be seen early on in the process? Any opinions, both negative and positive are asked for. Thank you.

Well, I'm not going to fluff this out much. Can you get an interview to schools? Yes. Is it likely? Doubtful.

Just to give you all a heads up I pulled a 21 on the 2000 MCAT. Yeah, blew monkey chucks there. I was told by EVERY admissions dean to retake it. I did and pulled at 26. (My practice test average was >30...go fig)

It sucks. You have time though for about 2 months to hit the books and get the August MCAT in.

So, in a round about way of answering your question, yes you can apply and you may get an interview. I have heard stories of that. I jsut know way too many people with <25 MCAT that didn't get squat or a peep. So, my suggestion is to start the application process and retake the exam.

Did you feel that taking the August MCAT put you behind in any sense?

I didn't take an august MCAT but there are PLENTY of people that did and got interviews.

Have your application completely ready, submit as soon as you get your MCAT scores back, and you'll be just fine. I know a couple of people who did this, raised their scores, and had plenty of interviews and acceptances.

Good luck.

You both should study hard and retake the beast. The extra time before med school will allow you to not only boost your score on the MCAT, but will give you the opportunity to gain some additional experiences -- shadowing, volunteering, EMT, teaching, research, etc. Good luck!

I would recommend retaking it. However, you should be able to get accepted to a couple schools with those scores.

Your really think a 22 MCAT 3.11 GPA or a 20 MCAT 3.4 GPA are guaranteed entrance numbers?

Just rereading this.....you sound kinda defeated. As I was a bit when I studied my ass off for 6 more months and got my MCAT back when I was SURE I kicked the crap out of it.

Now is the time to close the doors, toss out the computer, unplug the PS2/XBOX/GC, put all recreational reading away, unplug the DVD player, and put up residence in the Library. Grab as much exams and practice tests you can....fork up another 175-190 for the MCAT and go beat the s*&^ out it. Don't settle for anything...go for the throat...take it again and get a 34 or better! Then that 20 will be just a memory!

Definitely not a guarantee. However, there are some schools that accept a decent number of applicants with these numbers. I will obviously refrain from listing names, as this topic is very sensitive to many around here. I learned that the hard way.

Yes...there are some sensitive types around here. Duly noted.

I am in a similar situation. I took the MCAT in 2001, and did not do very well. Currently I am signed up to take the August test. Should I wait to submit my AACOMAS application till my scores come back? Or submit my application now, knowing that Adcoms will review it with my less than stellar MCAT score?

Wait a second, the way this sounds is that i shouldn't submit my app now.
I thought i would submit it now, and just take the MCAT in August and reports the scores as soon as i get them, am i correct in thinking that?

That is what I would recommend you do.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as far as scores go. My pre-med advisor told me to take the April MCAT, even though I told him I didn't have time to study. He advised that I not study and just see how I do, and plan to take the August MCAT as "the real thing." So I did.

The result was a 22R -- 5PS, 5BS, 12VR and R. My gpa is ok, 3.55, I've shadowed DOs, and have good EC's, presentations, publications, work as an EMT, etc. I was planning to apply to my top choice, MSUCOM even with this low MCAT.

What do you guys think? It seems the going trend is wait til after the August MCAT, but I was really hoping to get an earlier start than that. Thanks for the feedback.

I took the MCAT in August and went up 4 points without studying.

I would recommend applying in mid-summer, and go ahead and submit your MCAT scores. You can always submit the new scores.

Apply to as many schools as possible---someone will almost always have an interest, so increase your chances.

This is the best advice.
