Hello everyone,

I'm looking into Pharmacy as a possible backup just in case I decide not to go through with Podiatry. Can anyone tell me what is the average GPA and MCAT and/or PAT score one should attain to be considered admission? Thanks in advance.

From your post it is obvious you haven't looked that far into pharmacy requirements. In order to gain admission into a school of pharmacy you have to take the PCAT. GENERALLY, you will need a GPA of 3.5 or above and a PCAT score of 85 or above. Again, please remember this is a generalization. One last piece of advice, find something you're going to enjoy doing for the rest of your life, simply picking a field for the sake of having a backup isn't going to make you happy.

I don't agree. Having a backup plan is always a prudent idea. Pharmacy is my first choice - so first that it's painful to consider anything else. But if I had not been able to get into pharm school (I gave myself two application cycles to succeed), I planned to finish my BS in biology, obtain additional training and certification in medical technology and eventually get a grad degree in public health. I don't hold it against anyone who chooses pharmacy as their plan B.

whatever you decide think about it carefully. No admission office like to see their applicant apply to them as a BACK UP plan. So research it as much as you do for podiatry school. Some will ask you in their interview, so have a solid answer. And I agree butler-pharm D. Try, even as a back up, to find something you enjoy, because you'll be doing it for long time. If you like going for pharmacy then disregard what I said.

Podiatry and pharmacy are pretty different...

However, I can understand you wanting to have a backup plan.

Just research the two fields and try to keep your GPA above 3.0, the higher the better.

I'm not familiar with the PAT.

For pharmacy, make sure your math/science GPA is around a 3.5 and try to score in the 90th percentile on the PCAT. It will also help to get some volunteer experience in a pharmacy.

I'm pretty sure pharmacy school is a lot more competitive to get into than podiatry school. Strange that something even harder to get into is used as "backup".
