I was recently accepted into pharmacy school for fall 2010, except I've been feeling double minded lately. I've always had the thought of doing medicine in the back of my head but never went through with it. I'm thinking of maybe going back to school starting this summer. I have about 83 credits done, and most of the pharmacy pre reqs are similar to the pre-med classes. If I was to go back starting this summer how soon would I have to take the MCAT in order to apply for fall 2011? Also my over gpa is a 3.3 right now and my science gpa is around a 3.0, I would really need to bring those up ASAP. I would appreciate any advice!! =)

Are you sure you don't want to be a pharmacist? You already got in... If I was you I would talk to a lot of people that know you really well and then weigh your options and goals. You might just be freaking out because you're scared to make a commitment to pharmacy.

Are you sure you really want to switch gears this late into the game? You are already accepted and it would take some real time and commitment to raise your gpa to a competitive level. Maybe an easier way to do this quickly would be to retake your lower classes and apply DO, which replaces your grades. I remember somewhere along the lines either AMCAS or my school asked if I had ever applied or matriculated at another professional school. After all, if they find out that you've been accepted somewhere and didn't attend, why would they offer you another acceptance just so you can turn it down too? You are also taking a gamble that your MCAT will be something competitive.

Overall, I would be thankful for the acceptance that you have in hand and attend pharm school!

To start med school in fall 2011, you'd need to apply this coming summer of 2010, so you'd need your MCAT done before that. It will take you a few years of straight As to get your cGPA and BCPM GPA into a competitive range for allopathic med schools.

With your current GPA of 3.3, and an MCAT score in the upper 20s, you'd have a decent shot at osteopathic med schools. Do you really think you can be ready to take the MCAT in April or May?

As long as you don't matriculate into a professional school, you'll be fine. Once you start it though, you'll be expected to complete the program before applying to med school.

For all med schools there are expectations for certain extracurriculars that you may not have acquired. The average med school applicant has about 1.5 years of clinical experience, for example (working face-to-face with sick people). Most schools expect physician shadowing. Perhaps you already have the research, leadership, and teaching experience, though.

Attend to pharm school, and if it turns out not to be the great. Then apply to US medical schools your 3rd year of pharmacy school. I honestly think that you should probably take the acceptance. But in the end its all up too you.
