I got accepted into CCOM which was definitely my top choice school. However, I am a bit bummed that they won't accept my undergraduate institution's chemistry sequence and will have to take that second semester of general chemistry next semester. I know, it's only a small bump in the road and it'll be worth it because I got a good vibe from that school and it's a DO school (closer to my heart because I jive with its philosophy and I'm excited to learn that extra OMM skill set).

However, I do have an interview with an MD school in Arizona. I've been intent on canceling that interview but now I'm not so sure. My interest in U of A Tucson is its strong integrative medicine program which I'm a fan of again because of that holistic philosophy. However, it obviously lacks that OMM training which I'm looking forward to.

What should I do?

I would attend the interview. Who know down the road, you might like MD better than DO.
It doesnt hurt to attend the interview except your bank.

Go to the MD Interview. You can always learn OMM later if you wish as an MD. Being holistic depends on your personality.

However, if you have no intention of moving to Arizona, don't go.

If the chemistry sequence you took at your undergrad was meant to satisfy the pre-reqs, you should let your undergrad know about CCOM not accepting them. Perhaps, your undergrad would be so kind as to send a formal letter to CCOM.

GL 👍

I know of this working for others in the past both on this forum and at local institutions. Sometimes it's a mere misunderstanding of the curriculum a particular undergrad institution provides. I would certainly not take it lying down - don't be a jerk but don't forgo the opportunity to work through it and avoid having to take the course.

If money isn't an issue and you're not dead set on CCOM there's no harm in going to the MD interview. At least you won't find yourself looking back years later and thinking, "What if?"

Thanks for all the great advice, everyone!

Great news! They ran through my pre-req's again and decided I don't have to take the extra semester of chemistry.

I've been pretty set on CCOM and money is kind of an issue, so now I'm back to being 99% sure I'm going there!

Thanks again 😍

FYI...I interviewed at UofA and they aren't going to start accepting students until mid-december but the bulk of students won't get acceptances until around March with waitlist/rejection e-mails going out in April...so no matter what you will have to put down the deposit on CCOM...that being said...go to the interview...you might like it

1 thing I loved about UofA over many DO schools was the hospital being on campus so you don't need to do much moving around during your core rotations but then again most of CCOMs hospitals are in Chicago unlike some of the DO schools that might have you moving from state to state for your core rotations.

Also the weather is really nice in Tucson at least in my opinion when compared to CCOM

Either way both are great schools and will give you a great education...I think you should go as I feel interview days are more than just the interview its about you checking out the school beyond the website (and I know UofA's website is not the best)

and UofA does a full on MMI (9 stations with 1 break station) and its definitely an experience

Thank you, IDFsoldierboy, for the details! 🙂

whats the tuition difference between CCOM and U of A?

I know you said many DO schools, but I just want to point out that UMDNJ-SOM does have its own hospitals 🙂

I don't know, but CCOM is private and U of A is public and I'm considered out of state so I'm assuming they'd be comparable. When I said money issue, I meant in the short term--cost for flying out to Arizona and having already laid down my deposit for CCOM. I think the timing is more important to me now so I'm sticking with CCOM. In terms of tuition, I'm already looking forward to that huge debt and most students can take out the maximum allowable in loans so I'm not going to judge based on that 😛
