Hi all
One of my students is looking for a Neuro residency, and she informed me that "some residents had mentioned that their faculty has also reached out to programs on their behalf to try to line up a few more interviews."

Is this a thing? Does it help? My problem is that even if true, I wouldn't know who to ask!

Wise resident and attending colleagues, what say you?

I've seen it a few times. You could email the PD to gently reiterate your support for the applicant (I assume you also wrote an LoR, if not then it would seem weird in general). Or if you have a personal connection with someone at the program, you could reach out to them to say that they're really hoping to get a chance to interview there. I don't think it makes any difference. It all just gets "added to the file". No one wants to be told what to do with their interview slots, unless its a horrible program with no chance of filling, in which case why would you be trying to help your student get in there?

More often, I see the faculty reaching out after the interview to tell a program how highly their protege thinks of them, as if this would constitute a harder-to-fake sign of commitment than the standard "I'm gonna rank u real good" email/letter from the applicant themselves.
