At this point, im on hold at a few schools...ive sent update letters to all recently with my updated Fall 2003 grades and letters of interest....do you think another LOR at this point would be a good idea?? The only person i can think of being able to get an LOR from would be an ER resident i shadowed for a bit last term. Would his words hold any weight?? What can he possibly write?? Any other suggestions as to what I can do to score an interview off hold would be appreciated

It depends on the school. I have called admissions offices with that very question, some say they will not review it, others say it will be put in your file and reviewed in the next round.

It looks like you have done your share of work to inform the adcoms that you are interested and an enthusiastic applicant. I am not sure about an additional LOR. For most schools I know, having an additional LOR would do no good. I would only suggest letter of interest and update grades but you have already done that. But I really don't think that at this point it hurts to get one. But the best strategy is to ask the school itself or perhaps if you dont want to be that direct with the school, ask your undergrad health professions office. If you are not an undergrad pm me and I will ask my HPO office for you. But I dont see why it would hurt to have an additional LOR. In terms of content, I have always been told that you want the LOR to be precise, to sound enthusiastic, to highlight all the positive qualities beyond what the adcoms have already gathered from your application, to be able to show them your passion in medicine through specific examples, and of course bottom line, as my health professions advisor puts it, to be one LOR that the adcom will remember. I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there and hopefully you will hear some good news soon.

as disenchated mentioned...

if you are sure your doc can write you a nice personal LOR that shows all that good stuff then it can only help you. however if he writes one that is just standard and nothing out of the ordinary, then its prolly not gonna look that great esp. since you are using that LOR to convince the schools to make a positive decision on you.

so make sure you know the guy well and he can write you a good LOR.

good luck.

Great point Jlee!! I absolutely agree that if the LOR is going to be mediocre or even Ok but not GREAT, then there is no point.

Aside from new grades and a letter of intent, unless you do something major I would not send anything else into the school. They have your LORs so they wouldn't need any more. I would say skip sending it it.
