Hi all,

I just took DAT for the first time yesterday. I didn't get the score I expected. Here are the score:

PAT 17
QR 18
RC 19
Bio 19
Gen Chem 23
OChem 18

Total Sci 19
Academic Avg 19

First of all, is that even a decent score?

Since beginning of the the year, I spent about 6 weeks reading my campbell biology textbook. Then 4 weeks reading my general chemistry textbook. Then 3 weeks reading old organic chemistry notes. Finally one week studying Kaplan PAT section. I did not have time to study for RC or QR. Obviously, that is not a very effective strategy. Now I have to wait 3 months before retake. It's a serious setback as I originally planned to apply in this July.

In the mean time can you give me a better way to study the materials?
It really bother me that I didn't do as good on biology and organic chemistry as I expected. I got what I deserved in PAT, QR, RC because I didn't spend enough time to prepare for it.

Please let me know how you study for the DAT. Any feedbacks and advices would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You should still submit your application in July when you planned, even with these DAT scores. Your scores aren't awful, they're just average. Depending on where you're hoping to go, you may not even need to retake. Just call and ask. If you do decide to retake though, there's a place on the application to note that you're planning a retake. The schools won't consider your application complete until they receive the latest DAT scores, but don't let that delay your app!

Try Crack the DAT PAT, that's what I've been using and it's very helpful! There's also a great thread on here to help explain some of the TFE and keyholes. Search "wicked sick pat tutorial."

Hope that helps! Good luck!👍

are you just reading the material?
or are you actively studying and taking notes and reviewing?

Do problems
Topscore, Destroyer, Achiever

Dont just read the material and expect it to be stuck in your mind

It sounds to me like your problem is that you're not learning actively. As mentioned above, do more problems if you need to retake. You should first read the material you need to know for chems, then keep doing practice problems after you have the concepts down.

check out DAT STORY below for how I changed up my strategy for a second attempt

Like said above, depending on what school you want to go to and your GPA, your scores are average for those accepted into Dental School, which puts you in not necessarily the best place, but still a good one. Call the schools you're interested in and ask them personally, they'll be very honest. I know that there are a handful of schools that require that nothing be below 18, but most are fine with a 17 if you make up for it in other areas.

I'd say to definetly apply, and weigh your situation on the stats of the school you want to go to. There's no reason to spend all the extra time studying again if your scores are good enough for the schools you want to go to. Just my 2 cents, good luck!

Well since you didn't use too many resources with practice problems, maybe you can try doing that now. Great ghem score!! I highly recommend Destroyer and Topscore!! Too great resources for the sciences and great practice problems. Also, CDP is really good. Even though you have to wait 3 months to retake, submit your application whenever it's completed and the schools will wait for your DAT. Best of luck!

Taking control meant helping themselves, and not only depending on help from agencies. It meant taking matters into their own hands, instead of thinking that someone else knew what kind of job they would like or should have. Taking control of their job search also meant being "the leader" as they searched for jobs.
Using these strategies:

  • Helped them when they were frustrated or disappointed during the job search
  • Helped them find jobs that they liked
  • Added to the help they got from their agency
  • Allowed them to focus on their own goals
  • Made them feel more in charge
