So, I have a really amazing advisor...in [their] own right. Super researcher and clinician, which is intimidating and comforting all at once. However, this is my first year, and I'm working with a few ideas that I hope will become my master's, but I can't get real feedback. The advisor is pretty passive, and so am I, so it is tough to make forward progress. I know this is abstract, but I would love any comments about how to communicate with a passive advisor...if only to get the ball rolling. I also think I have all that typical anxiety of "is this a relevant/interesting/important question?" and getting wishy-washy confirmation...you know? Anyway, I'd love to hear some thoughts.

Look up some stuff on assertion training, non-verbal communication (body language. eye contact, etc), and some CBT stuff on organizing thoughts/feelings.

I'm half kidding......but that is what you need:

1. Brainstorm and develop one or more suggestions for a paper topic
2. Setup a time to discuss your ideas
3. Use proper body language, eye contact, proper tone/inflection/etc...and present your ideas.
4. Ask for feedback / next steps

That should get you pointed in the right direction.

sound advice 🙂

I'm definitely learning that specificity is key when going into a meeting.
