San Antonio does. Currently teaches three systems to residents - Straumann, Astra and Zimmer.

do you know if the VA or the school program is better in san antonio?

I have been lead to believe that VA programs are LOADED with prosth. It seems like the gov't actually takes care of their vets with long-term prosth restorations.

Implants being one of them.

If you have VA questions, you should ask it on the military forums also. Even though I don't think the VA residencies are filled solely by military dentists. They will still be able to give you some insight into the lives of the residents.

San Antonio teaches only two implant systems, according to my sources, the dental residents, 90% Zimmer, 10% Straumann, Astra has never been used. Other poster needs to get facts correct.

Repeat, UT San Antonio teaches 3 implant systems. Overall, two weeks ago one first year resident placed 10 in one patient, a second year placed 12 in one patient.

Anyone can call current residents at the clinic, 210-567-3270, ask to be connected to a resident or have a resident call you back. Get the real story!

So Facutsa--what brands were the implants in those multiple implant cases and and how many Astra have been placed this year--remember, tell the truth!

DenQT is wrong. I am a current temple AEGD resident, and I know that this program no longer teaches how to place implants. But we restore a bunch of them.

At UT San Antonio, this residency year, in the 10 month period July, 2007-April, 2008 our AEGD and GPR residents placed 132 implants using 4 systems: Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Zimmer, and Biomet 3i. rsf We since have ceased placing Nobel and have added Astra. Both AEGD and GPR residents place implants with equal frequency. Total number of implants placed by the end of July will exceed 150.

how many residents does san antonio accept per year? also would you mind sharing your stats from dental school....i was wondering how competitive it really is to get in.

That's pretty impressive. Do you schedule block time for implant surgeries in your clinic, or just ad hoc them individually?

Thanks for asking, have only posted on 2 threads to address isnaccurate info being posted.
Not block time, implant placement scheduled as the patient is made ready, patients are comprehensive care and assigned to residents. Great patient pool.
7 AEGD, 6 GPR (expanding AEGD by 2 positions in a satellite clinic, residents wil be permanently in that city 120 miles from main campus); 5-6 fulltime and 3 part-time faculty, generalist and specialist, whose only assignments are teaching our residents.
Also emphasize thirds, IV, medical compromise, veneers, perio surgery - grafts (bone and CT), esthetic crown lengthening including altered passive eruption correction. No pedo, little to no ortho, trying to get Invisilign. 400 hours lecture/seminars each year.
Admission criteria:
DDS from US or Canadian School (we don't make this rule but have to follow it)
National Boards
Desire! Our most important criteria. Desire to learn, learn, learn, to work hard, to be a colleague, to be responsible, to be a professional, to serve the public, to enjoy life and have fun, to help us treat our patients.

Stats: we don't maintain stats such as class standing, Boards, GPA as we do not consider these accurate measures of resident performance. (and several current faculty were top 10 in their classes) We interview 4 persons for each resident position and receive about 7 qualified applications per position, as usual for AGD/GPR programs. Also important stat: it's over 100 today, so wear short sleeved scrubs!
