Hello, I am a current D3 Student. From any current or past residents can anyone explain the major differences between aegd and gpr. I have been told aegd prepare you more so for private practice. Is there any truth to that? Whatever information anyone is willingly to offer I will greatly appreciate it!

GPR tend to be hospital based, AEGD usually in some sort of dental school setting, not exclusive though, GPR you will be taking call dependomg on hospital can be brutal.

I think the AEGD will give you more exposure to the different specialties assuming the school offers specialty residencies. At least mine did. I got to sit in some of the lectures that the grad students (OMS, Ortho, Pros, Perio, Endo, Pedo) were attending.

As far as “preparing you more for private practice” I would say this is more program dependent rather than GPR vs AEGD. But mainly GPR’s are connected to hospitals with non dental rotations like anesthesia, ER, internal medicine, etc. These can range in length. AEGDs do not have this component. So GPR’s are heavier in the medical component. That’s pretty much the only true generalization you can make. Every program is different.

If you plan on going into OS you will better off at a GPR, at my GPR I spent 6 weeks with the Oral surgery residents at Cook County and you were treated as such, taking call and extracting teeth etc, doing rounds.

Would you say its more competitive to get into an AEGD vs a GPR? From my research its far more GPRs than AEGD. So I am assuming it may be more chances to get into a GPR. Also if we cant visit many of the programs due to financial reasons is it sufficient enough to email program directors letting them know our interest in their programs? Ask them if its possible to talk to current residents?

I would agree that generally you are correct. But I know some GPRs don’t have anything like you describe and some AEGDs very well might. My main point is to not focus on AEGD vs GPR because it really does come down to the program. Not just the classification.

It is equally as easy to get into a GPR or AEGD. And equally as hard to get into a “good” GPR or AEGD. Yes it is sufficient to email and talk with residents. But gotta go to the interview obviously. I would encourage you to try to visit a few programs around you if possible, even if you don’t think you’d be interested. It helps to have an idea of what’s out there. There is a huge spectrum of programs and what they offer.

YEah you really need to look hard at the GPR, some are great and some are pretty bad from what I hear.
