AEGD vs GPR

Yes, do a search and you'll probably find plenty of info. The biggest difference is that GPRs are hospital based and AEGDs are clinic based. GPRs also tend to pay more and you'll have more exposure to IV sedation cases.

From my personal experience and I am sure that this is true for some GPR programs is that GPR is designed for you to manage dental patients who are medically compromised while AEGD is for "polishing your dental skills". You learn to treat these patients in hospital setting as opposed to regular dental office in the AEGD. While you will learn things that are not taught in dental schools (in which I think they should), there are lots of wasted time such as going on rounds with medical students/residents, ER rotation, surgery rotation, OB/GYN... I am sure that we should be exposed to such but not weeks long rotations.... AEGD is like "advanced 5th year dental school", you learned more advanced cases that are too difficult for undegraduate program. You need to check each program to make sure that it is what you want. I have heard HORROR stories from both AEGD and GPR residencies. DP
You can check accrediation guidelines for both programs... At one time they were 100% different... now there is an entire range... each program is different... they are many good AEGDs and GPRs... speak to current residents in each...
Major difference are medically compromised, OR cases, and 24 hour emergency coverage (and more pay) in GPR... more major cases and dental school faculty in AEGD.. but some AEGD provide medically compromised (like Temple for example) and some GPRs to implants (like us)

Is there a reason more people go to GPR than AEGD after dental school? Is it simply because there are more GPR programs available? Or is it some other reason? From what I've read about the differences in the two from this thread, it sounds almost as if AEGD might be more practical, so I'm just wondering why more people enter a GPR after graduation than AEGD.

The other reason some people choose GPR is because they may want to do OMFS afterward so hospital based training would help. Also, some want to work in a VA setting and that requires you to do a GPR to make you qualified. I think it is simply a ridiculous idea as that drive away many qualified DDS to work in the VA. DP
